Currently, twelve versions of Isuzu D-Max utes are available for purchase, and they do provide a nice drive for the money spent. Tough and modern, the Isuzu D-Max is the perfect ute for tradies and farmers, not to mention the city slickers who appreciate a vehicle that has plenty of room and style for getting away for the weekend. The D-Max has plenty of their utes fitted with 4WD, so if you have a bit of off-road adventure inside you, then these are the models that do impress with their level of rough terrain ability.
Take an Isuzu D-Max 4×4 off the tarmac and onto some wild, untamed terrain, and the traction “Terrain Command” control with ‘shift on the fly’ between 2-High and 4-High at any speed up to 100 km/h is a handy feature. There are some hairy places in the Aussie Outback, and the D-Max 4×4 holds its own very well. Traction Control System (TCS) also empowers the Isuzu D-Max 4×4 to gather traction with some excellent prowess. Wheel articulation is good, for when the uneven terrain tests the suspension out, and having great ground clearance and entry and exit heights the D-Max 4×4 masterfully makes its way through the toughest Outback obstacles.
Under the bonnet of the new Isuzu D-Max is a powerful 3.0 litre turbo diesel, in-line 4-cylinder, DOHC, 16-valve engine. Maximum torque of 380 Nm is available between 1800 and 2800 rpm for both the five-speed automatic and five-speed manual versions. With this level of grunt, the power delivery of the D-Max 4×4 and D-Max 4×2 is effortless and smooth. Isuzu have done a great job in making the engine refined. Maximum power output is a credible 130 kW at 3600 rpm.
It doesn’t take much time in the new Isuzu D-max before noticing that the fuel economy is good for a vehicle of this type. All models, whether automatic or manual, return a combined fuel economy run of a tad over 8.0 litres/100 km. Powering through a windy section of back-road uncovers the excellent road-holding and commanding view of the road ahead. Steering control is accurate, and there are always dependable levels of grip in hard cornering. Depending on the model of D-Max, and I guess your own preference, the D-Max can sit on rims up to 17-inch rims and 245 rubber.
There are many features that make the Isuzu D-Max very safe. Your ride height is superb; the build strength of the new Isuzu utes is excellent, and numerous active driving aids enhance safety. All models come with Traction Control and Electronic Stability Control. ABS and EBD are standard stopping features, and the D-Max hauls up very well in emergency braking situations. All 12 variants boast six-airbag safety. Side airbags are standard. Seatbelt pre-tensioners, an engine immobiliser, and side anti-intrusion bars inside all doors are some of the superior safety features.
Enter into the high-end D-Max LS 4×4 and 4×2 models, and the comfort and level of modern technological items is similar to that of a luxury sedan. Air-conditioning with an integrated heater/demister function, power windows, cruise control, a CD player, Bluetooth connection, a multi-information display and heaps of practical cabin storage compartments makes the D-Max a well-equipped vehicle in standard composition.
As touched on earlier, the Isuzu D-Max is a grunty ute; and it’s this sort of turbo-diesel grunt that makes it ideal for towing tandem trailers, caravans and the like with ease. The Isuzu D-Max is rated for towing a 3500 kg braked trailer or 750 kg un-braked trailer. The Single Cab D-Max has a massive deck for carrying copious amounts of gear. The Crew Cab D-Max boasts more than adequate carrying capacity on the deck.
You’re looking good with the modern styling of the new Isuzu D-Max. Competing directly with the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton, the Isuzu D-Max is highly rated.
