Ironing out some small issues in market share has meant Jaguar has needed to expand from lovely, luxurious sedans to lovely, luxurious SUVs. The F-Pace SUV has been quickly followed by the addition of Jaguar’s smaller dynamic SUV package in the form of the brand new Jaguar E-Pace. The growing Jaguar range has only gotten better with the option of another SUV, and the E-Pace now has the goods to rival the Porsche Macan, BMW X3, Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V… and the list goes on. All-in-all, the E-Pace Jaguar is a well-priced machine that sits it below the big Euro competitors but a bit more than alternatives from the US, Australia and Asia. Let’s take a closer look.
Having additional cargo and passenger space in an SUV will be good news for those Jaguar buyers wanting something different from similar-sized sedans. Driving an SUV means you have a bit more flexibility and variation in your daily driver. A higher ride height gives a great view of the road ahead, and with modern SUVs like the new Jaguar E-Pace the drive can be surprisingly economical. Gone are the days where you would disregard an SUV solely on the grounds of poor fuel economy. You will be pleasantly surprised at the way both petrol and diesel versions of the new E-Pace can be quite restrained on fuel use -of which none suffer from an impoverished drinking habit.
Three choices of engine power are offered under the hood of a base model Jaguar E-Pace SUV. More engines are available as you move through the variants. Interestingly, For the E-Pace model, two diesel engines outnumber the alternative single petrol motor, yet they are all incredibly fuel efficient. A base model E-Pace is a real winner in terms of a seriously luxurious small SUV that looks so good and yet is great on fuel. The D150 engine is a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with 110 kW available at 3500 rpm. A maximum of 380 Nm of torque kicks in at 1750 rpm and feels very lusty and flexible. Impressive combined fuel consumption can be as low as 5.6 litres/100 km in ideal conditions, so expect around 6 litres/100 km – awesome!
More powerful, the D180 turbo-diesel E-Pace has 132 kW at 4000 rpm to play with, and 430 Nm of torque from 1750 rpm. This is a strong engine that is remarkably well sorted and refined. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h can be completed in less than ten seconds while a top speed is in excess of 200 km/h. Added power, acceleration and torque for seemingly negligible fuel consumption sees this engine as the engine of choice – at least by me – though the petrol version is a smooth performer.
Known as the P250, the base model Jaguar E-Pace feels very refined with this engine under the hood. 2.0-litre turbo power sees the SUV take on more of a sporty mould, with as much as 183 kW of power available and 365 Nm on song between 1200-and-4500 rpm. In this form the Jaguar E-Pace has a top speed of 230 km/h and 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7 seconds. Expect a combined fuel consumption to be around 8 litres/100 km – pretty good!
For those of you who want to delve into more distinctive style in an E-Pace SUV, you’ll be interested to note that the E-Pace also comes in an S, SE, HSE, R-Dynamic and First Edition guise – where the HSE and First Edition are seriously loaded with high-tech kit. Also, as you may like the sporty styling of an E-Pace S, sexy lines of an SE or even the full flavoured HSE, you have the choice of two other very powerful engines to fit the sporty nature of this luxury SUV. An exceptionally strong D240 turbo-diesel is a 2.0-litre diesel with some real get-up-and-go. Acceleration can see a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.4 seconds and a top speed of around 225 km/h with this motor at the helm. A full 500 Nm of torque is available from as low as 1500 rpm. Fuel consumption, on average, should remain lower than 7 litres/100 km most of the time. It really just depends how heavy the right foot is.
An E-Pace S, SE and HSE can be also be had with the seriously quick 221 kW P300 2.0-litre engine. This is the quickest on offer, and with AWD you can get places really quickly. All of that speed and handling prowess comes at a higher price but they offer a startling level of performance that rarely sacrifices any practicality in the process.
AWD traction gives the small E-Pace SUV excellent grip and road holding. The E-Pace is 4395 mm long, has 892 mm of rear legroom, while the large 577-litre luggage capacity is quite exceptional for its class. Split-folding rear seats also make for more luggage carrying ability – should the need arise. Five seat accommodation is comfortably roomy, and the new E-Pace provides the latest connectivity technologies that is even able to connect with up to eight devices at once which are streaming content using E-Pace’s 4G Wi-Fi hotspot. A premium Touch Pro infotainment system links to favourite apps and pumps out impressive surround sound. A large 12.3-inch driver display and head-up display are features you’ll find in the stylish E-Pace SUV, and there are also modes for personalising the driver’s preference for throttle, steering and transmission settings. A gesture control tailgate makes life easy when loading the luggage compartment.
Five-star safety is ingrained into the E-Pace DNA, with features like rollover mitigation. Adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and front and rear parking aids available. There is even a pedestrian airbag beneath the bonnet’s trailing edge.
It’s hard not to get excited about the way the new Jaguar E-Pace looks and drives. The combination of sports car looks and superior performance makes the E-PACE distinctive. Every Jaguar is designed to excite, and with so many options in the form of model variants and engines, this is a desirable small SUV – let alone a Jaguar SUV! Definitely one small SUV to check out on the shopping list: the new Jaguar E-Pace.
