A brand new Jaguar holds a lot of status, and when going head-to-head with an Audi or BMW these are just as lean and mean offering plenty of power and lavishing luxury throughout. Built for kingly folk who love travelling at its best, the Jaguar XF has a new trick up its sleeve too. Now providing a series of new station wagon models in the XF line-up, the medium size XF has a very balanced flavour in what is a terrific drive. Where a five-series Beemer might provide a little more room in the rear seats, the XF still has a beautifully crafted interior that is comfortable and attractive. Jaguar XF cars ride and perform very nicely indeed; and the exquisite detailing inside the cabin is just the icing on the cake. Offering more cargo space than the sedan, the Jaguar XF Sportbrake station wagon is simply charming.
Known in Australia as the Jaguar XF Sportbrake, this sport/luxury wagon is a very special blend that you’ll find hard to match. Luxuriously equipped with accented leather seats and interior trim, the XF also boasts a very practical 565 litres of cargo space with the rear seats in place. You’ll find the new XF Sportbrake’s rear seats fold completely flat or they can be divided with a 40:20:40 split-folding pattern. If you are carrying particularly heavy loads, the XF Sportbrake also comes with a self-levelling rear air suspension so that the dynamic handling remains even and predictable. This system automatically inflates air springs to counteract the weight of heavy loads, helping to ensure a level chassis and ride height.
All new Jaguar XF wagons are built with especially careful detailing on new safety technology. The Sportbrake senses hazards ahead of you to keep you safer. Autonomous Emergency Braking warns you of a potential collision and then brakes automatically when required. Lane Departure Warning, and a distinctive All Surface Progress Control (ASPC) system provides low speed cruise control for slippery conditions. A very good Head-up Display system is clear and easy on the eye, using laser technology for accuracy and precision. The Head-up Display includes information such as the vehicle’s speed, navigational information and cruise control notifications. A five-star safety result in the 2015 Jaguar XF crash testing by Euro NCAP gives peace of mind for a buyer of the new XF Sportbrake.
Two model variants of the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake are standard. We’ll start with the Jaguar XF R-Sport Sportbrake, which has some really nice key features that are worth mentioning. A set of 19-inch alloy wheels, an R-Sport body kit (which includes a sports front bumper, side sills and gloss black roof rails), 10-way electric Sports grained front leather seats with Technical mesh inserts, a power tailgate, Xenon headlights with a striking LED signature design and keyless entry come a standard.
The Sportbrake XF R-Sport provides a choice of two 2.0-litre engines. The obvious difference between these is that one is diesel and the other petrol. Powered by the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel, the RWD Sportbrake has 132 kW of power and 430 Nm of torque available for the 8-speed automatic transmission to put the power down via RWD. Performance figures result in a top speed of around 230 km/h and a 0-100 km/h sprint time of a smidgeon over 8 seconds. A nice performer but equally nice on your wallet, the small diesel engine sips fuel at less than 5 litres/100 km on average.
If you prefer the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol version, the RWD 8-speed automatic Sportbrake provides the driver with 184 kW of power and a maximum of 365 Nm of torque from low down in the engine revs. The combined fuel consumption figure of less than 7 litres/100 km is impressive, along with the top speed in excess of 240 km/h and a 0-100 km/h dash done-and-dusted in around 7.1 seconds.
Equally as effective at cosseting and impressing the car’s occupants is the Jaguar XF S Sportbrake which adds some features like Head-Up display, adaptive dynamics, 10-way electric Suede/Grained Leather S embossed front sport seats, a 360° parking aid camera and signature DRL lighting. The Sportbrake XF S ups the Sportbrake’s output rating to V6 power and boasts luxury in a completely stylish package with plenty of sport features. A specially tuned sports suspension with ride control and adaptive dynamics feels very solid and is super safe, and the red brake callipers look good and haul the Sportbrake V6 in very neatly from speed. Sitting on 19-inch alloy wheels, boasting twin exhausts, a sleek rear spoiler and unique interior styling, the XF S looks the goods and lives up to its name. The 3.0 litre V6 twin-turbocharged diesel engine offers exceptional power, torque and drivability. It uses innovative twin-parallel sequential turbocharging, which is a concept pioneered by Jaguar Land Rover where smooth, more immediate delivery of power at all engine speeds, as well as two-stage water cooling to conserve energy is part of the innovative engine design.
Driving the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake S is something special, and with the amazing 3.0-litre V6 engine leading the charge, the RWD wagon is a slick performer – with its power run through a sophisticated 8-speed sports automatic transmission. The 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel has a maximum power output of 221 kW, while the torque seems to just keep on charging. An impressive peak of 700 Nm is available from 2000 rpm. A governed top speed of 250 km/h is matched with a 0-100 km/h sprint time of less than seven seconds.
Modern technology is included throughout the classy new Jaguar Sportbrake XF wagons. You’ll enjoy the latest in-car infotainment systems and remain connected to people via Jaguar’s “InControl” suite of advanced technologies. Integrating seamlessly with your personal devices, data and media, the infotainment system is set to make you ride enjoyable and informed. InControl Apps enable you to control compatible apps on your Touchscreen, such as Spotify and Tile, ensuring the safe and convenient use of apps while you’re driving – though your passengers will enjoy using the entertainment, too.
Choose the optional extra Connect Pack, and you’ll have the ability to create a Wi-Fi Hotspot using your car’s antenna. Other features include a multi-function app that allows you to monitor and interact with XF from your smartphone. Touch Pro features an upgraded 10.2-inch touchscreen with natural dialogue voice control, a 10GB of onboard dedicated media storage and an all-new navigation system that has both 2D or 3D maps with a predictive navigation function.
The Jaguar XF Sportbrake models offer seriously superb sound systems that bring your music favourites to the next level. You can choose from two sound systems: the standard 380 W Meridian Digital Sound System with 11 speakers or the new optional digital 825 W Meridian Surround Sound System offering concert-like audio through 17 speakers. This is ready to wow you!
Aimed at lifting the bar, the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake and sedan models have done just that. This is a multi-award winning car that deserves attention.
