Audi’s A4, BMW’s 3 Series and Mercedes Benz’s C-Class cannot rest on their laurels. With the introduction of the latest Jaguar XE, the luxury medium sedan market has just hotted up. These four cars are the epitome of mid-size luxury and performance, and their driving experience is one to enjoy and savour. Jaguar’s new XE is at the top of its game, so what is it that makes the Jaguar XE a winner? Let’s take a closer look into the world of the luxurious new 2020 Jaguar XE.
It’s been facelifted; and the Jaguar XE design has a striking face with clean, trim LED headlights that are narrower and more powerful than before. The front of the XE looks more dominant and imposing, with very smart and angular scoops in the bumper design to direct airflow and increase downforce at higher speeds. Running your eyes along the side of the new XE, and the high waistline that slopes down toward the front from a high boot lid at the rear gives the impression of speed and agility. The back of the sedan has been finished with a tidy design which has slim-line LED taillights, a body coloured bumper and a tighter, tucked-in backside. All-in-all, the new Jaguar XE sedan is a stylish, executive-looking car which looks outstanding and attractive.
On the inside, the Jaguar XE has a heart of gold. Now the XE is brimming with the latest Touch Pro Duo entertainment system which, incidentally, is a new Land Rover product. The top mid-dash screen is a 10.2-inch display that selects and controls all of the infotainment gear, while the bottom screen works the climate control functions and one or two other tasks. This Duo system also has the ability to run the satellite navigation directions on the top screen, while running the music features on the bottom screen – a very smart and handy feature. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard on all Jaguar XE models.
The gear selector has a more conventional lever instead of the swivel dial that was on the previous cars. This is way better and feels sportier, as well as being a more unified, ergonomic experience. You’ll notice that the steering wheel is thicker, and has a beautiful soft material which adds to Jaguar’s quality driving experience.
Sit yourself down on the driver’s seat, and the car has a snug, comfortable seating position. Seat and steering wheel adjustment is very good, and it is easy to locate the best driving position for yourself. Another nice new feature on the 2020 XE, which was first introduced in the Evoque and has been added to the 2020 Jaguar XE series of cars, is the rear-view mirror which can be switched to a wide angle, live camera shot of what is behind the vehicle when you are reversing. This is a superb feature which not only aids pedestrian safety but also makes life much easier when you need to back your way out of a tight driveway. Parking sensors and a reversing camera are standard items, as well.
Currently in Australia just the one 2.0-litre, 221 kW petrol engine is offered. With the great power output comes 400 Nm of torque, so this RWD luxury sedan is no slouch. A limited top speed of 250 km/h and a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 5.9 seconds allows you to really get a move on should you need to. The wonderful Jaguar chassis has a superb, safe chassis that hugs the road and irons out the bumps nicely. It’s pretty quiet in the cabin, too. You get an Aussie XE in R-DYNAMIC trim and with a smooth, quick 8-speed automatic gearbox. Jaguar claim a combined fuel economy cycle of 6.7 litres/100 km. That’s very good considering the level of performance to match. Expect real world figures to run a little higher, however. SE and HSE models are the trims you can select from, and this really is a top car for the driving enthusiast. You can also tow a trailer up to 750 kg without brakes, and if the trailer has brakes the limit runs out to 1800 kg.
Two USB ports and a 12V socket are located in the usefully sized centre console. You also get two cup holders for carrying your Latte. A handy space in front of the gear lever doubles as wireless charging and as a connection for your phone. Boot space is pretty good for the sedan (455 litres), while you do get the option of adding 40:60:40 split folding rear seats for more luggage versatility. When the rear seats are fully folded flat, there is a very nice flat floor for carrying lots of items.
Automatic lights, automatic wipers, emergency braking, lane departure warning, a driver drowsiness monitoring system, 18-inch alloys, ambient lighting, an array of optional interior trimmings, cabin air ionisation, cruise control and even leather upholstery are standard on this new Jaguar, so it is an extremely well-furnished car. Premium new technologies include adaptive driving dynamic modes, Jaguar Drive Control and an updated EPAS. It also boasts a five-star crash safety result – nice!
HSE models get the equipment works! Here things like 10-spoke 19-inch alloys, premium LED head lighting, signature DRLs, auto high beam assist, heated door mirrors, perforated Windsor leather 16-way electric driver memory front sport seats with 2-way manual headrests and contrast stitching, a driver assistance Park Pack, and a driver assistance Drive Pack.
A 3 year/unlimited km warranty comes as standard with each new Jaguar XE making life pretty sweet for the new car buyer. This is a car that should appeal to the discerning buyer; and, if you have always driven German cars, now is a great chance for you to try out a new Jaguar XE and experience the difference.
