X marks the spot. The X factor. The X files. And haven’t we all read detective novels where mysterious identity of the culprit is hidden by the name X? No matter what the context, the letter X symbolises excitement, thrills and adventure. So it is fitting that the Jaguar X-type carries that letter.
Before taking an overall look at the Jaguar X-type, it would be best to start by clearing up the mysteries of what variants of Jaguar X-type are available. The Jaguar X-type comes with two body styles – sedan and wagon – and with a range of engine types and transmissions. There are three engines to choose from; the 2.1 litre 117kW V6 petrol, the 3.0 litre 172kW V6 petrol or the new 2.2 litre 4-cylinder diesel with a huge 366Nm of torque. The X-TYPE also comes in 3 levels of trim and key standard equipment – 2.1 LE, 2.2D LE and 3.0 LE; 2.1 Sport, 2.2D Sport and 3.0 Sport; plus the superbly appointed 3.0 Luxury.
No matter what engine type you prefer in the Jaguar X-type, you’ll find that the X stands for EXhilarating. Even the small 2.4 litre diesel engine packs a good wallop, giving 366 Nm of torque at a very low 1800 rpm. Power is strong with 107 kW at 3500 rpm. And the 3.0 litre V6 punches out 172 kW at 6800 rpm and a top torque of 284 Nm at 3000 rpm. However, my pick of the Jaguar X-type engines would be the all-new 2.1 litre petrol which produces a respectable maximum power of 117 kW at 6800 rpm and superbly usable torque that peaks at 4100 rpm with 200 Nm. Top speed for the Jaguar X-type is 235 km/hr with the 3.0 V6 manual, and the best acceleration figures are 0-100 in 6.6 seconds for the same engine.
All models of the Jaguar X-type look lovely, and the X stands for EXquisite. The bonnet features classic sculptured lines, the signature grille and the heraldic Jaguar device perched proudly between the round twin headlights. From the side, the Jaguar X-type looks smooth and stately, with the wagon body style integrating the boot harmoniously without any of that “add-on” look that some wagons have, and the roof rails that are standard on all Jaguar X-type wagons also blend nicely with the aerodynamic lines.
When it comes to handling, X stands for EXtreme. The Classic variant has traction control to ensure magnificent grip and the other Jaguar X-type variants with the petrol engine improve on this with Jaguar Traction full-time all-wheel drive. The alloy wheels take any road easily with Jaguar’s Touring Suspension, and stop sharply and safely with ABS braking. And for maximum performance, the Jaguar X-type Sport Premium comes with Sports Suspension, dynamic stability control and EBD braking.
X is for EXemplary when describing the safety levels in the Jaguar X-type. No matter what variant you choose, the Jaguar X-type comes with front and side airbags for driver and front passenger (with occupant sensor), side curtain airbags, and pretensioner seatbelts front and rear (and not many cars install pretensioner seatbelts in the rear, so this is a very praiseworthy feature).
Lastly, X is for EXtras. And here, what you have in the interior of the Jaguar X-type will depend on the variant. The entry level Classic comes with a single CD player, cloth seats, leather gear knob, veneer steering wheel, adjustable steering, an auxiliary power outlet and pollen-filtering automatic climate control. At the other end of the Jaguar X-type spectrum, the luxurious Sovereign comes with rear parking sensor, 10-way adjustable heated front seats with lumbar support (and memory for the driver’s seat), leather upholstery with burr walnut veneer, steering-wheel mounted controls for the 6-disc audio system, cruise control and Bluetooth mobile, Jaguar Voice control for the navigation system, mobile phone, climate control and audio system, and a 7″ touch sensitive navigation screen.
Exhilarating, Exemplary, Extreme, Exquisite and with that Extra bit of style – there’s no mystery at all about the Jaguar X-type.
