Just when you might have thought that Range Rover had all the 4×4 vehicle bases covered, they have gotten the excitement of wind-in-the-hair and sun-on-the-skin and wondered how a convertible Evoque might appeal.  Well, appeal it does; this is, perhaps, the most fun convertible one can buy – what with Range Rover’s awesome off-road ability, comfort (especially for front occupants) and performance, the new Evoque Convertible is one of those special vehicles that makes you smile each time you get out and about in one.

Being the most compact Range Rover, the new Evoque Convertible still provides plenty of good usable interior storage space with exceptional levels of comfort – particularly for those in the front seats.  Available in three trims, the new Evoque Convertible looks racy and attractive both in the city and out scampering through country lanes.

Most of the time it’s a high chance that a new Range Rover Evoque will spend most of its time on the tarmac, with the in-frequent off-roading excursion being little more than a daring gallop over a curb to park on the grass where the cricket match can be observed from the comfort of the Evoque’s sumptuous interior – you get me here don’t you?  However, there will be a few owners who will enjoy exploring just how tenacious this little beast can be off-road.  It’s a real show-off when it comes to off-road ability.  Having Range Rover’s latest 4×4 technology at the touch of a button, the new Evoque can storm through mud laden fields and climb sand dunes with ease.  The best thing is that you can enjoy off-road shenanigans in full-on excitement with the Evoque’s top down.

2018 Convertible Evoques come with the option of two engines.  There is the 132 kW Turbocharged Diesel which is savvy on fuel and very strong at pulling away from any engine revs.  Those who like the feel of the smooth 2.0-litre petrol performance will revel in the turbo-charged power which delivers a 0-100 km/h sprint time of around eight seconds.

Whether you opt for the base model Dynamic, the SE Dynamic or HSE Dynamic, each model comes with an intelligent 4WD system.  Offering isolated front and rear sub frames, a stiff monocoque body-shell and 4WD, off-roading becomes great fun and easier than you might dare to think.  Functioning at very low speeds, between 1.8kph and 30kph, All Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) helps the driver maintain a steady speed in challenging off-road conditions so you can concentrate on steering and finding your way through obstacles.  ATPC also makes it easier to start off smoothly and safely on slippery surfaces.

Terrain Response optimises the vehicle’s engine, transmission, differentials and chassis systems to give the best set-up of comfort and traction no matter what the terrain is doing outside. There are driving modes the driver can select for various scenarios: General Driving, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud, and Ruts and Sand.

You have Land Rover’s patented Hill Descent Control (HDC) as a superior standard feature on all Range Rover Evoque Convertible vehicles.  An optional Wade Sensing system can be chosen which enables the Evoque to measure the water depth for any water crossing that looks a little more challenging.  One of the other superb features for off-roading and any other steep slope is Gradient Release Control which is similar to Hill Start Assist.  This system helps prevent the vehicle accelerating too quickly as it goes down a hill.  If the vehicle stops and starts on an incline, the system holds the brake before gradually disengaging as you pull away.

For those who just love the cool looks of the new and bold Range Rover Evoque Convertible but prefer the urban jungle, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible has some pretty cool technology as standard for navigating about the city.  The current Park Assist system makes parallel and perpendicular parking straightforward by automatically steering your vehicle into a suitable space.  Simply select the appropriate gear and control your speed with the brake and accelerator pedals.  This system will also guide you out of a space, making manoeuvres easier.  Graphics and notifications aid your progress.  There is an optional Surround Camera System for ensuring you can see everything around your vehicle via the display screen while parking.  Blind Spot Monitoring, Reverse Traffic Detection, Lane Keep Assist, a Driver Condition Monitor and active cruise control are features you’ll be glad you have.

Seat space is fantastic, comfortable and sumptuous in the front.  As for the back, the space tightens noticeably, and you’ll struggle to keep three full-grown adults happy over any long distance – it’s a bit of a squeeze.  That said if you are smaller in frame, then the upright seating position at the rear is quite nice.  Pop the roof back down via the switch in the centre console and in about 14 seconds you’ll all be snug as a bug in a rug.  Also, check out the Meridian sound system which really pumps out some sound.

A tailgate allows you to access a handy luggage space because the roof doesn’t take up much of the cargo area at all.  But, it’s not cavernous cargo area, however a couple of suitcases will easy fit.

There are ten snazzy exterior colours in total ranging from Ice White through to Racing Red.  You do look pretty cool in what is a chunky SUV-style Convertible.  Definitely, the 2018 Range Rover Evoque Convertible is worth a look if you’re after a compact convertible with serious off-road ability.  Cool and fun, you’ll want to be seen in one!
