Range Rover’s Evoque is a compact luxury SUV that embraces loads of style and ability. Petrol and Diesel Evoques are available but what I’m concentrating on today is the Diesel variants. You know you’ve arrived when you pull up in a Range Rover. This is the sort of vehicle that you expect to see at the ‘Night at the Proms’! All swished up and carrying the ladies in their ball gowns, and the lads in the tuxedos, the new 2018 Range Rover Evoque is sleek and modern to drive – perfect for that fashion statement.
All models are well equipped, but there are the higher-end models that boast breath-taking interiors. But let’s just take the time to look over the base Range Rover Evoque Pure Diesel model. Immaculately presented, this Evoque is the only model available with the manual gearbox as an option. You can opt for the automatic transmission if you like. But the diesel engine which is under the hood powering both the manual or diesel option is the flexible 110 kW turbo-diesel that keeps CO2 emissions to low levels while providing efficient and economical transport. With this diesel motor you can expect a combined fuel efficiency of around 5 litres/100 km. Automatic variants linked to this engine come in the form of Pure, SE and SE Dynamic.
Inside the Range Rover Evoque Pure are numerous modern features that impress. Being a Range Rover, the Evoque Pure still has impressive luxury, with heated door mirrors, an auto-dimming rear view mirror, a leather steering wheel, an eight speaker sound system with InControl Touch integration, satellite navigation via InControl, an 8-inch touchscreen in the centre of the dash, cruise control, and front and rear parking sensors with a rear view camera. Six-way manually adjustable seats ensure that the best seating position can be located. Two-zone climate air-conditioning keeps the cabin feeling nice for the trip ahead, and there is a 12V power socket in the front of the Evoque as well as one in the luggage area. Luggage capacity is very functional and easy to use, with 575 litres available on five door models with the rear seats in place. Fold them down 60:40 and, of course, this luggage space grows.
Opt for the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder 132 kW turbocharged Diesel and Evoque variants with this engine come in the form of the SE, SE Dynamic, Landmark Edition, HSE and HSE Dynamic. This engine loves to be put through its paces, with plenty of power for getting the job done. With this engine you get All-Terrain Response – a nice little perk for this very capable compact off-roader. The nine-speed auto is very smooth, allowing the Evoque to get the 0-100 km/h sprint over-and-done with in around 9 seconds flat. Average fuel consumption for this model works out to be a bit over 5 litres/100 km.
SE, SE Dynamic, HSE and HSE Dynamic Range Rover Evoques can come powered with the top-of-the-range 177 kW turbo-diesel offered by Range Rover for this compact SUV line. Boasting 177 kW and loads of torque, this is one very sweet performer. Fuel efficiency with this sort of performance is exceptional, with an average fuel consumption attainable around 6 litres/100 km. A top speed of 217 km/h and a 0-100 km/h sprint completed in a little over 7 seconds makes this the perfect long distance performer. Obviously any of the models with this engine come with premium luxury and quiet interiors.
Opt for an HSE Range Rover Evoque Diesel and luxury is all yours. Features like 19-inch alloy wheels, power heated door mirrors with memory, electronic heated Windsor leather seats with memory, approach lights and puddle lights, auto high beam assist, a Head-Up Display, configurable interior mood lighting, a top of the range Meridia Sound System with 380 W and 10 speakers plus a subwoofer, InControl Touch Pro, a 10.2-inch touchscreen, InControl Touch Pro Navigation and keyless entry to name a few of the special items.
Safety features on all 2018 Range Rover Evoque Diesel variants include: Hill Descent Control (HDC), 4 Wheel Drive (4WD), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Electronic Traction Control (ETC), Roll Stability Control (RSC), Electric Parking Brake (EPB), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Trailer Stability Assist (TSA), front airbags, curtain airbags, side airbags, ISOFIX anchorage for kids seats, pre-tensioning seatbelts and more. All of these features are standard on the Evoque Pure variant. Some of the higher-end Evoques have more features like Head-Up Display, Lane Assist and adaptive cruise control.
Out on the road the Evoque is quite a sharp handler thanks to the low centre of gravity. Especially Evoques with the 132 kW and 177 kW engines are responsive and smooth. The Evoque is easy to live with and enjoyable to drive.
Having had a make-over, the 2018 Range Rover Evoque is classy eye-candy with revised bumpers, nice signature LED DRLs, and beautifully crafted interiors. It’s a compact SUV that makes a fashion statement for many, but for those who love the looks and the off-road ability you just won’t look anywhere else.
