2024 Land Rover Defender LWB

2024 Land Rover Defender LWB

Once you’ve got a Defender, you won’t want to let it go.  For good reason too, because these are off-road kings and they give you a sense of freedom that few other vehicles can offer you.  The tight little rocky track that disappears across the stream and over the hill is just another great adventure waiting to happen – if you drive a serious off-roading machine like the Defender, that is.

I have to say that of the three Defender sizes you can buy, it’s the short wheelbase (SWB) 90 that I love the most, mainly because it gives you the chance to pivot on a coin and has the least chance of bellying out.  You can read my review of this model in the car reviews for Land Rover.  That said, the 2024 Land Rover Defender long wheelbase (LWB) models, the Defender 110 and Defender 130, are not fazed by any rough terrain –not in the least.

You’ll definitely be considering the LWB versions of the new Defender if you require more luggage space, a smoother ride, and more seats for passengers.  I mean, you can even sleep in the back of the Defender 130, if that’s what floats your boat.  To give you an idea, in its 5-seat passenger configuration, the 2024 Defender 110 offers 34.0 cubic feet with the second row upright and the third row flat.  With the optional third row and the second row upright, the Defender 110 has 10.7 cubic feet of luggage space.  Put it another way, that’s 1075–2380 litres of space to fill. Fold those back seats down flat, and a whopping 69 cubic feet become available.  Take all the rear seats out completely, and there are actually 78.8 cubic feet behind the first row, which is more than enough for… whatever you want to do there.

But when you consider what the 2024 Land Rover Defender 130 offers in terms of cargo/interior space, it’s kind of like going from a large (Defender 110) to an XL (Defender 130) sweater.  The longer Defender 130 offers 15.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row in its upright position.  Then there are 35.8 cubic feet behind the second row when the third row is folded flat.  Fold all the rear seats down flat, and a humongous 76.1 cubic feet are available behind the front seats.

Driving a Land Rover Defender these days is a lot cushier than the old days.  The 2024 Land Rover Defender 90 and 110 models feature a 10-inch touchscreen with a Pivi Pro infotainment package.  The Defender 130 boasts an 11.4-inch touchscreen to go with its ‘big boy’ dimensions.  All models come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless charging with a signal booster and Remote Compatibility mode.  There is also a 3D surround camera system with a ClearSight Ground view all around the vehicle.  Mate, that makes it a complete doddle to park in the city and, when you’re tackling some hairy tracks in the bush, it definitely is working for you to give you the heads-up for any gnarly obstacles coming your way.  Heated front seats with memory and an HD Radio with SiriusXM is all rather fancy for the modern-day driver.

Of course, when you choose a Land Rover Defender, you also have access to loads of options and premium features and upgrades.  Things like an interactive driver display, an 11- or 14-speaker Meridian Sound System upgrade that boasts big subwoofer bass notes, front seat memory functions, Ebony Morzine headlining, a heated steering wheel, a front centre console that doubles as a refrigerator compartment, elegant walnut veneer trim, a premium cabin lighting package, a ClearSight interior rear-view mirror, an awesome sliding panoramic roof, and even an option for heated rear seats.  These things are standard on high end versions; the most luxurious of the 110 and 130 models are the HSE and V8 versions, which come packed with all the goodies.  There are diesel, petrol, and plug-in hybrid engines with a combined fuel economy ranging from 3.4 to 12.8 litres/100km, depending on the model’s badge.  There is something to suit everyone who wants to be in on Land Rover’s legendary 4WD machine that is the Defender.

New Defenders all come with a permanent 4WD system.  This means all four wheels are constantly receiving power as needed according to the terrain and driver demands, and whether you’re on the road or off it.  The new Defender is a great choice for off-roading, and the easy-to-use Terrain Response system makes its 4×4 ability extraordinary.  You’ll find that the LWB versions of the latest Land Rover Defender are particularly comfortable on the road.

It’s a vehicle to be proud of and definitely a machine to take you places.
