The very clean and award winning 4×4 design has a pleasant boxy design that, in the latest guise, is accentuated with the Range Rover-like headlight design. The sweet design has plenty of space to burn, and is best appreciated seated inside the cabin. Or, like Mr Bean, in a tiny yellow Mini pulled up next to the Disco 4 at the lights. While inside a small car at the lights, you can get a magnificent feeling of just how big this 4×4 is.

Well equipped for the long haul, the Land Rover Discovery 4 can take up to seven occupants. Moulding to any body shape, the seats prove to be exceptionally comfortable and hard wearing. The cloth upholstery is of premium quality, and with the upmarket models having cabins that are lathered with copious amounts of leather: why would you buy a more expensive Range Rover alternative? The quality inside the Discovery4 is every bit as good as its highfaluting cousin.

Each Land Rover Discovery 4 is packed with standard luxury features. The climate control systems work exceptionally well, making any Australian summer’s day feel as “cool as a cucumber”. Electric windows, sunroofs and maximum safety make the Land Rover Discovery 4 very easy to own. And when packed with high end, easy-to-use technology, including: a state-of-the-art 14-speaker Harman Kardon Logic 7 seven-channel digital surround sound audio system, Hybrid TV, a rear seat entertainment package that is also available with Hi resolution LCD screens in the front headrests and a 6 disc DVD changer for hours of entertainment for rear passengers, you would be forgiven for feeling rather princely in any of the Disco 4 upmarket models.

On the road, there is a superbly solid feel to the way the new Discovery 4 behaves. Colossal levels of grip and refinement, power and performance, and sensational off-roading ability make the Land Rover Discovery 4 the ultimate cross country tourer. A world-leader in 4×4 transmission and gearing, the capability of the Discovery 4 to plough up slippery ascents, ford rivers, tackle washouts and do doughnuts on sand dunes is quite astonishing. Just don’t tell Land Rover that test drivers are prone to taking their demo models to the limits – if they’ve got the guts – as the limits of the new Land Rover Discovery 4 are well beyond the scope of the average family adventure.

Power is plentiful. On offer are some terrific engines: a new 5.0-litre V8 petrol provides range topping power. And there are two diesel alternatives that are at the top of their game. There is the fabulous 2.7-litre TDV6 which provides a smooth torque distribution for remarkable flexibility. The figures speak for themselves, and the best diesel technology means that the Land Rover Discovery 4 turbo-diesel has 140 kW of power and a maximum torque level of 440 Nm acting from a sensationally low 1900 rpm. Also, the TDV6 engine comes with either the six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission giving class leading performance. The other diesel engine is new for the Discovery, and the 180 kW power output is seamless in its delivery. Colossal levels of torque and a smooth connection with a brand new automatic gearbox make this one of the best Discoverys yet.
