The LDV D90 is a full-size, body-on-frame, SUV and it competes against models like the equally large Ford Everest and Holden Acadia. If looks alone would make or break the D90, then the new LDV SUV has an attractive appearance that sets it apart from its rivals, doing no harm to itself whatsoever in the styling division. Plenty of chrome trim on the exterior has the D90 looking up market, and there is no doubting the large LDV D90 silhouette has an imposing presence about town and on the road. Of course, the large LDV SUV also ensures that you feel safe while driving it, thanks to its nice high ride and solid build quality. Let’s take a closer look at what the new LDV D90 has to offer.
Climbing on-board the LDV D90, and when you open up the doors they open extensively for easy entry; then wow, the cabin is very stylish and good looking, giving you a breath-taking welcome when you climb up into the seats. This is a really decent design effort by LDV and the leather seating and steering wheel, the chrome trimmings and veneer inserts, the huge central touchscreen placed smack-bang in the middle of the dash all spell luxury in capitals. A lovely gloss wood finish to the dash really delivers style to this big rig. As for the seating comfort and ergonomics, the driver will enjoy the nice comfortable seating position which is found via plenty of manoeuvrability in the steering wheel and driver’s seat arrangement. The steering wheel is a multi-function affair that also feels really snug in your grip making the drive relaxed and affirming.
Storage in the front row is very good, with a couple of cup-holders, a roomy flip-lid compartment for your mobile phone in front of the gear lever, a huge compartment under the central arm rest swallows loads of stuff, and there are big door bins that hold bottles as well as a decent size glovebox.
Second row seating is very roomy, with loads of leg room and comfort. The second row can also be slid forward and back, as well as being reclining. You can fit three child seats across the second row seating, all of which are easily clicked into place thanks to some isofix points. Second row passengers will also enjoy their own climate control switchgear and air vents, so things are pretty nice behind the front row. Three more seats are found in the third row, though the middle occupant best be of a smaller stature. That said, the window seats in the third row are comfortable and provide a surprising amount of leg room, even for adults. Air vents are also placed strategically for good air flow. Around to the boot, and we find a very decent 343 litres available for luggage with the third row seats up and in place. Fold the third row down flat and the luggage space grows to 1350 litres. Then you can also fold the second and third rows flat for a humongous 2382 litres! All up the LDV D90 is definitely a luxury and roomy eight-seater SUV, perfect for a weekend away with the family.
Now what’s underneath the smooth D90 bonnet lines? The answer is a peppy 2.0-litre turbo petrol with four-cylinders doing the business. And it actually hauls the big D90 along very nicely. Gone are the days where a 2.0-litre would always struggle with this sort of bulk, but with a gutsy 165 kW of peak power as well as a strong 360 Nm of torque available you can get along very nicely – even with the large size and weight that the D90 has. Economy averages out at around 12 litres/100 km – an area that might be of concern. Still, I can think of thirstier petrol-fed large SUVs on the road. Plant your right foot and the D90 is happy to get a shuffle on, then ease off and she will very happily waft along in a tidy, relaxed fashion. A top speed of 175 km/h is rather a non-essential piece of information, however the D90 can scamper through the 0-100 km/h dash in around 10 seconds.
Selectable driving modes for Normal, Sport and Eco come as standard on all of the D90 variants, however the 4WD version also offers the selectable driving modes for Rock, Mud, Sand and Snow
Safety features are aplenty in this large luxury SUV, so all the advanced safety items are there, and they come as standard on this big rig. Adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, auto emergency braking, curtain airbags right down to the third row, and even a driver fatigue alert system include themselves in the list. ANCAP rates the LDV D90 with the full five stars, giving the buyer the confidence that they are buying the real deal.
Out on the open road the new LDV D90 rides comfortably with plenty of grip. The steering wheel is nicely weighted at higher speeds, but light about town. But given its heft there is some diving under hard braking and body roll that’s detectable – but not surprising. When you do ask plenty from the engine, the motor spins freely and delivers with gusto. Higher engine revs do make their way audibly into the D90 cabin, so you do notice when the D90 is working much harder. Peak torque of 350 Nm is available between 2500 and 3500 rpm.
Take the D90 into town, and you’ll find that the big D90 dimensions are bulky. Measuring over 5m from tip-to-tip, and with a width of over 1.9 m, the new LDV D90 is a giant among SUVs. There is a great reversing camera with parking guides which do make things a little easier in tight city spaces.
The massive 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen syncs with you smartphone and also offers both Apple Carplay and Android Auto for those who love their music. A beautiful HD driver’s display looks very classy behind the steering wheel. All the mod-cons are available like Radio, MP3, Bluetooth connectivity, Smartphone connectivity, hands-free phone, heated and memory electronic leather front seats (Executive), satellite navigation, adaptive cruise control, three 12V power sockets, parking sensors front and rear, smart key entry, LED Daytime running lights, Hill descent control, and the list keeps going. An electric parking brake with auto hold function, engine stop-start, ventilated seats, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning and six different drive modes (AWD) are all standard fare. There is even a panoramic sunroof and a three-pin power socket available.
As far as price goes it is hard to find a large SUV in the same league as the new LDV D90, especially when you consider how well equipped the D90 really is. Value for money then? You bet! For somewhere around the $40k mark you can drive away in one of these very nice, luxurious SUVs. It also comes with the very decent 5 year/130,000 km warranty when bought new, so LDV have got you covered!
