Having had experience in landscaping and gardening, I can see what an asset the new LDV T60 Mega Tub Ute would be for businesses needing a serious workhorse. This ute is capable of hauling some serious amounts of material from A-to-B, towing a decent trailer load of dirt and has been designed to be a worker’s best friend. LDV are makers of a series of strong workhorses, so, whether it is a van or ute, LDV have you covered.
2021 sees LDV introducing the bigger T60 Mega Tub Ute onto the market, and from all accounts it’s a real winner. Practicality spearheads the Mega Tub Ute’s charge, where you’ll find the big difference with this Mega Tub vs. the standard T60 ute is the longer 3470 mm wheelbase. This lengthened wheelbase makes the Mega Tub a whole lot bigger. It measures 315 mm longer in overall length, which equates to a tray/tub on the back that’s 275 mm longer. Inside the wellside Mega Tub tray is an 1800 mm internal length dimension. The standard CHEP Australian pallet size is 1165 mm long and 1165 mm wide. The pallet height is 150 mm. One of these pellets easily slips inside the LDV Mega Tub Ute’s deck dimensions. LDV joins utes like Ssangyong’s Musso XLV and VW’s Amarok XXL in bringing additional length for new ute buyers. Builders and contractors will find the added load lugging ability very handy, indeed.
To match this extra cargo-carrying ability, the new LDV Mega Tub Ute boasts plenty of pulling power and will tow up to 3 tonnes. The grunty 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine gets you up and moving without fuss out on the open road or around town. If you like a stick shifter, then the six-speed manual will be for you, or you can opt for the six-speed automatic, where all the gear changing is left up to the truck to decide. Both are good options and have their merits. Power is rated at 110 kW and torque is a healthy 360 Nm from low down in the revs. The maximum 360 Nm is available between 1600 and 2800 rpm. ‘PWR’ and ‘ECO’ modes tighten or dull the throttle response respectively, and, while the lengthy T60 isn’t the most frugal ute on the market, it sure as eggs isn’t the thirstiest. You should be able to pull figures of around 10 litres/100 km relatively regularly. Being a 4×4, the new LDV T60 Mega Tub Ute boasts very good off-road performance and even boasts an on-demand diff-lock feature on the rear axle. If your work site gets a bit slippery or happens to be at the bottom of a gully, then the 4×4 ability will be a sought after feature.
LDV T60 vehicles are covered by LDV’s very good five-year/130,000 km warranty, and servicing intervals are set at every 12 months or 15,000 km. Yes, there are more powerful utes on the market, however the LDV motors are very robust, frugal and strong. The big LDV T60 ute stays nicely composed when carrying a hefty load on its back, and the overall ease of driving is likable.
On the tech front: the 2021 LDV T60 Mega Tub Ute is a well kitted out office on wheels. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto feature on the menu and Bluetoothing can have you playing your favourite music tracks in no time at all. A 360-degree camera displays on the 10.0-inch infotainment touchscreen display. There is a decent single-zone climate control that works well. A set of adaptive LED headlights are automatic and load adjusting. There are a couple of USB points at the front, and a 12V socket features for those in the rear seats.
Electric windows all round is a nice touch, as are the leather seats. Interior practicalities are good, with a couple of pop-out cup holders situated under the air vents. Cabin space is decent, and the second row is spacious enough and pretty much on a par with most other dual-cab utes you’ll find on the market. Rear seat air vents are a nice touch.
Safety is a big necessity when you’re regularly out on the road. The modern LDV T60 range of utes have already been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating, which dates back to 2017. An update I hope would be seen as an addition would be that of autonomous emergency braking; however, all other safety features give the T60 Mega Tub plenty of protection. There are six airbags, and ABS is standard. Actually, the following safety features are standard: LED DRLs, the Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFS), Blind Spot Monitoring, a fatigue reminder and attention assistant, ABS, EBA, EBD, ESP, Hill Descent Control (HDC), a Hill-Start Assist System (HAS), Roll Movement Intervention (RMI), a Traction Control System (TCS), Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), fog lights, lane departure warning, a tyre pressure monitoring system, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and even an engine immobiliser.
The big LDV T60 Mega Tub 4×4 Ute delivers the goods that most people want, and you can’t argue with the hugely competitive pricing. You can own one of these for well under $40k.
