For 2021, the Mahindra XUV500 is one of the most affordable SUVs available in Australia. Two versions are offered, both of which will seat seven in decent comfort. Buy one of these new, and you will enjoy a 3-year/100,000 km warranty and a solid, strong motor for getting yourself about our continent. The Mahindra XUV500 sits in the mid-size SUV segment and does so in style.
Mahindra’s XUV 500 SUV is a pretty nice looking machine. The exterior has appealing lines and detailing for what is a decent-sized, comfortable wagon. Take, for example, the wheel arches, which are full and bold. They make a real impact on the side view of the XUV500, particularly with their effect on the windowsill line at the rear. The horizontal door handles are a nice touch, as is the crimped waistline that is visually strong, the downward sloping roofline gives a sporting note to Mahindra’s elegant SUV as it drops away toward the back of the vehicle, and the overall appearance sets this SUV design up as one of the nicest looking on the market today.
At the front of the vehicle, the nose is powerful and big, incorporating large headlights, vertical DRLs, and a chrome nudge bar to match the chrome sidestep bars (premium model). At the rear of the vehicle is a clean finish to an appealing seven-seater SUV. Volcano Black, Lakeside Brown, Mystic Copper, Opulent Purple, Crimson Red, Moondust Silver and Pearl White give the buyer plenty of choice for what colour they want their new Mahindra SUV to dress in.
Inside the 2021 Mahindra XUV500, there are seven seats. Certainly, the front five get ample space and nice seat comfort for long journeys. The third row seats are large enough to seat two, though taller adults will find long periods back here a bit of a squeeze. Air vents and cup holders are provided for third row occupants. There are loads of storage compartments all about the XUV500’s cabin, and, as the driver, it is very easy to get yourself comfortable behind the wheel, thanks to height adjustability in the seat as well as steering wheel height adjustment. For some people, the dash design may be a little on the bland side, but everything is functional, simple to read and easy to use. The dark fascia lights up with a pleasant blue background once the engine is started, an attractive appearance.
Safety is strong, and the Mahindra XUV500 delivered a 4-star safety result. It has a strong chassis and safety cell, 6 airbags, rollover stability control, electronic stability control, hill hold control (nice handy feature) and hill descent control to name a few. Boot space with seven occupants inside is not a strong point (93 litres), however you can tow up to 2.5 tonnes. If just five seats are occupied, the third row can be folded flat to provide 405 litres of luggage space.
The seven-inch infotainment system boasts Bluetooth entertainment and connection to your Smartphone. A reversing camera is standard, so, as soon as reverse gear is selected, the clear picture of what’s behind the vehicle displays itself up on the screen, centre dash. The reversing camera also gives you measurements of how many centimetres are left in the green zone for reversing up to. Excellent! Standard equipment on the base W6 includes front and rear air-conditioning as well as cruise control, while the up-spec W10 version brings sat-nav, leather trim, park assist and electric folding wing mirrors.
Out on the road, a new Mahindra XUV 500 is easy to drive. Despite its size, Mahindra have kept the SUV as compact as possible, and it drives neatly over all road surfaces. The Mahindra XUV500 ground clearance is 200 mm, and it rides on 235/60 R18 tyres. A higher ground clearance makes it easier to go over tall speed breakers or drive on broken roads without scraping and damaging the car’s underbody. It is an enjoyable drive once you understand the vehicles design print. It’s not a sports car, it’s a comfortable SUV that will eat up the miles at legal road speeds. It’s also a great car for the growing family. Around town, the light steering makes it a breeze for manoeuvring, and the turning circle is excellent.
Under the seven-seater SUV shape lies a 2.2-litre turbo petrol that is linked to a six-speed automatic gearbox. Equipped with up to 103 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque, the 2.2-litre engine drives with plenty of punch and decent refinement. You can have the XUV500 in FWD and AWD form, and it is covered by a 3-year/100,000km warranty with five-years of roadside assist.
A new Mahindra XUV500 is arguably the best-value mid-size seven-seater in Australia, and value for money can’t be beaten. This is a very likable SUV that promises strong reliability and pleasant driving dynamics, lots of style and excellent practicality.
