Mahindra knows all about making solid vehicles for work and play. The Indian multinational corporation doesn’t just do automotive machines; they also have plenty of experience in various sectors which include automotive, defence, aerospace, agribusiness, energy, telecommunications and a lot more sectors. Mahindra sells a range of excellent utes and SUVs, and the new 2024 Mahindra Scorpio is a stylish 4×4 SUV that offers solid 4×4 underpinnings for serious off-road action, a comfortable and spacious interior, and decent reliability. Two models of the Mahindra Scorpio SUV are available in Australia: the Z8 and Z8L. The L should be a giveaway that this is the higher-spec version.
The Scorpio Z8 is the entry-level model, priced at a little over $40k. What you get in the Scorpio’s base model are things like a snazzy set of 18-inch alloy wheels, six seats, leather interior trim, an 8.0-inch infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic wipers and projector LED headlights to set the ball rolling. Inside the cabin, you’ll find dual-zone climate control is a standard feature, as well as a reversing camera and rear parking sensors. All you have to do is push a button to start the Scorpio SUV, and that’s after gaining access via keyless entry. So, even this base model feels a well-equipped and comfortable SUV.
There is also plenty of space inside for relaxed, comfortable seating, thanks to its six-seater arrangement with two seats across three rows. I like the cut of its jib, and it works well for a relaxed environment – whether you might be taking the kids off to school, heading out to work, or heading away for a family adventure.
For not a whole lot more, you could buy the Z8L Scorpio , which will provide you with several additional features like a wireless phone charger, a 12-speaker Sony sound system, a front camera, front parking sensors, a larger 7-inch display for the driver, and a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.
Both the Z8 and Z8L Scorpio SUVs are 4WD and are powered by the same impressive 129 kW/400 Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that is paired to a smooth six-speed automatic transmission. It’s a pretty frugal unit that can return an average fuel consumption of around 7–8 litres/100 km. The 400 Nm of torque feels ample for travelling quickly out on the open road or just flicking from one set of lights to the next in a congested city environment. The Mahindra Scorpio SUV is also capable of towing an unbraked 750 kg trailer or a braked 2500 kg trailer, so its practicality and workhorse value also starts to shine through.
There will be those of us who will be looking at the Scorpio purely as a perfect family 4×4 wagon for delivering off-road proficiency. Tackling off-road terrain is also what Mahindra has designed this SUV to do, so with its 4×4 capability, loads of torque, and its six-speed auto, the Scorpio has a great blend for providing outstanding levels of off-road ability for those on the lookout for 4×4 adventure.
The Scorpio SUV is built tough, and feels solid and safe at any speed – both on and off the road. All the good stuff is there, i.e., ABS (antilock brakes), electronic stability control, DRLs (daytime running lights), automatic headlights, EBD (electronic brake force distribution), hill descent control, hill holder assist, and even rollover stability control and trailer sway control are standard features. Rear parking sensors (and front on the Z8L) allow this big SUV to be parked easy enough, and it also comes standard with front, side and curtain airbags.
The 2024 Mahindra Scorpio is one of the best value-for-money SUVs in the market today. It also has the talent to put some of its significantly more expensive rivals in their place off-road.
