How many new station wagons are on the market today? I suspect there are still quite a few you can check out if you are on the lookout for a new one. I venture to say that one of the best new wagons you can buy in 2024 is this sleek-looking Mazda 6 Wagon. It is a stylish front-wheel-drive wagon with a responsive and efficient engine, and there is decent space for occupants, who sit in nice comfy seats, and the boot offers plenty of luggage carrying potential.
If you are looking at a wagon, then you’ll appreciate the extra space for luggage, and it’s likely this is the main reason, along with practicality, you’ll be buying one. Aren’t they the perfect car for taking the dog and the kids to the park? The new Mazda 6 offers 506–1648 litres, depending on how you configure the split-folding rear seats.
A glance around Mazda’s latest model 6 Wagon, and it’s evident from the outset that Mazda have done their homework on making this an aerodynamic and sleek wagon design. Its smooth low-profile lines look suave, but these profiles are backed up, with the actual drag coefficient (CD) being an impressively handsome 0.28. Good aerodynamics is the first thing you want to get right when it comes to making a vehicle with low fuel consumption. If you want to be impressed even further, the 2024 Mazda 6 Sedan boasts a CD of 0.26.
Mazda has done a lot over the last decade to get their engines as efficient as possible. You may have heard of Mazda’s SKYACTIV approach that has steadily filtered through into their entire line-up of vehicles. Every aspect of Mazda’s vehicles is engineered to maximize the driving dynamics and efficiency. So, the body construction and engine technology, the chassis, and the transmission are all scrutinized and engineered in order to offer the best outcome for impressive EPA-estimated MPG ratings. In so doing, Mazda has enhanced the overall performance of their cars, making them some of the best cars for everyday driving.
But now for more on the models and engine. The 2024 Mazda 6 Wagon offers the new-car buyer five variants, each with varying grades of luxury and technology. The Wagon range kicks off with the G25 Sport Wagon, which has a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder motor that runs on 91-octane unleaded petrol and is primed for work. It offers its driver up to 140 kW of power, and the 252 Nm of torque is ample for everyday tasks. The 0–100 km/h sprint takes around 8.5 seconds, and the Wagon is impressively quiet all the way up and beyond the legal limits. Check out this fuel consumption figure! The SKYACTIV stuff must really work because you can expect the Mazda 6 G25 Sport Wagon to have a combined fuel consumption of around 7 litres/100 km, dropping to as low as 5.9 litres/100 km out on the open road.
The 2024 Mazda 6 dash houses a handsome yet unobtrusive touchscreen centre stage, while there are easy-to-use more conventional climate control, fan, and stereo buttons below. Steering wheel controls and electric windows, along with a premium fit and finish, give the base Mazda 6 G25 Sport Wagon plenty of class. This model also comes with features like a DAB+ digital radio and six-speaker sound, speed-dependent volume control, two-zone climate control, a heads-up display, GPS satellite navigation, voice recognition, keyless entry and start, rain-sensing wipers, a smart cloth trim for the seats, a leather steering wheel, metallic and gloss finish interior inserts, a speed limiter with a speed zone reminder, 12-volt auxiliary sockets, smartphone connection and integration, auxiliary input sockets for MP3/CD/cassette, auxiliary inputs for USB, and a iPodMP3 decoder.
As with the base model, the G25 Touring Wagon also runs with the same 140 kW engine and also uses the same six-speed automatic transmission that delivers smooth, timely gearshifts. But with Touring badging come a few more gizmos and luxury features like wireless phone connection and charging, an 11-speaker sound system, and partial leather trim available for your enjoyment.
Bring some more zoom-zoom into the room, and for a little over $50k (at the time of writing), the 2024 Mazda 6 G35 GT SP Wagon is set to impress with its maximum of 173 kW of power being available at a very accessible 4000 rpm. Its performance is made even more muscular with an impressive 420 Nm of torque on tap from just 2000 rpm. This makes for an exciting drive, and definitely makes it a very affordable wagon for those who like some extra performance in their daily driver. With the 0–100 km/h sprint completed in around 7 seconds, you can also stretch the GT SP out to 240 km/h on the right piece of road. Another thing I like about this car is that it effortlessly covers the ground quickly point to point, and there is ample power in reserve to fly past slower traffic when the need arises. Handling is very surefooted, and the steering is nice and accurate.
The Mazda 6 G35 Atenza Wagon and the 20th Anniversary Wagon also come equipped with the same engine that you find in the GT model. They also come with all the features and luxury you would expect. All 2024 Mazda 6 Wagons boast a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, so things like crash avoidance technology, collision mitigation (even in reverse gear), pedestrian avoidance technology, traction control, ABS, electronic stability control, hill hold assistance, lane keeping assist, front and rear cameras, and loads more are all standard features.
You might think I like this car, and you’d be right. The 2024 Mazda 6 Wagon is a stylish, dependable, practical new wagon that can bring more smiles on the drive home than you might think.
