Here is another standout SUV, not only because it looks really good and drives good too, but the 2024 Mazda CX-60 SUV is also available as a hybrid, well a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) actually. That’s right, low fuel costs, lower emissions, and you’ve got space to burn inside this comfortable, eco-friendly tourer.
What a great design! Mazda keep rolling them out. It’s not in your face sort of styling but it does get you standing back and saying, “Yes, that looks really good”. And the CX-60 is an SUV that really does look great all the way round. The front is streamlined, elegant and classy. The side view is actually quite sporty and low-slung. While around the back end of the vehicle is a very tidy design, all in keeping with what a decent SUV should look.
Mazda have done very well in keeping the higher SUV body shape (and you can’t get away from it) as athletic, flowing, and sporty as possible without losing the plot and going crazy with add-ons to try and soothe its overall massive shape. I’m thinking of add-ons like an oversize kidney grille or weird top heavy front lights to capture your eyes away from the fact that the vehicle in question does have rather large SUV dimensions – and you won’t find these on the CX60 Hybrid SUV.
Slip into the 2024 Mazda CX-60 Hybrid SUV’s interior, and the elegance continues. Quality materials are used, excellent use of space, a nice and elegant dash design, high-end switchgear and knobs, all work towards winning the occupants’ hearts over. The new Mazda CX-60 Hybrid SUV has a definite luxurious feel, the high-end trims boasting full Nappa leather, maple veneers, chrome trimmings, heated and ventilated seats, a heads-up display, a digital driver’s display, a powered adjustable steering wheel column, and all of the modern tech equipment like wireless smartphone connection and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I quite like the fact that the infotainment screen is controlled via some swivel knobs down by the gear lever, which is actually easier to manipulate when driving than having to faff with touch and gesture control. The climate controls are also separate from the infotainment screen, so nice and easy to set things how you want.
There are two USB sockets located up front, a wireless charging compartment, huge bottle holders in the doors, vanity mirrors, loads of space for passengers front and rear – even with the glass roof, 2 USB sockets in the rear, heated rear seats, 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats, and 570 litres of space behind the rear seats. So, this is a really practical SUV, and I really like it!
Mazda SUVs are safe, and they have been scoring very well in the crash testing sites around the globe. The 2024 Mazda CX-60 Hybrid SUV is no exception, with our own ANCAP team awarding it a full five-star result. During testing, it was noted that maximum points were given for the protection of the driver and children in a side impact, as well as to the driver in the oblique pole test, which is considered a more severe test of a vehicle’s strength and protective capabilities. ANCAP also noted that all regular child restraint types can be safely accommodated in all three rear seat positions. This is a roomy five-seat SUV and great for families, by the way.
A mild hybrid 3.3-litre turbo-diesel engine, and a mild hybrid petrol can be used to power the CX-60 SUV. A RWD platform and AWD are available. But the one I’m reviewing here is the 2.5-litre PHEV, which boasts loads of grunt. The 2024 Mazda CX-60 Hybrid SUV packs 240 kW of power to drive an AWD powertrain. That makes this a quick (0–100 km/h in 6 seconds), fun SUV to drive, and one that can handle a bit of light off-road work. There are modes you can select for your drive, and these are Sport, Normal, EV, and Off-road. The eight-speed automatic gearbox is wonderfully smooth, and it’s easy to drive through town and city environments. You can do 30–40 miles (up to 75 km) on battery power alone, and as it’s a PHEV, if you arrive home from work at night and plug the CX-60 into the wall, you can actually do most of your drives on the battery’s power, making city commutes really frugal on the wallet. When you do need the extra power and ability of the petrol motor, it’s there: it’s as simple and as reliable as that!
So, there you have it. The 2024 Mazda CX-60 Hybrid SUV is one SUV I’d be queuing up to buy. I love the fit and finish, the sporty engine, and those awesome vibrant colours.
