Mazda is going all out to cover the bases to ensure that it has an SUV for everyone and every purpose. One of the newest to enter the fold is the impressively handsome Mazda CX-70 mild hybrid SUV. Loaded to the hilt with all the latest technology and features, this is an SUV to be proud of. It looks great, too, and fits itself nicely between the mid-size CX-60 (also new) and the large CX-80 (also new). Considered as a large SUV, the CX-70 has those same flowing lines and elegant appearance that sets new Mazda vehicles apart from other manufacturers on the road. Mazdas are refreshingly different.
The 2024 Mazda CX-70 mild hybrid SUV runs with two 3.3-litre engine variants. Both engines are very useful in terms of performance and refinement but differ in the type of fuel they use. The mild hybrid petrol variant can hustle you from 0 to 100 km/h in around 6.8 seconds. Linked to a smooth 8-speed automatic, the inline-6 e-Skyactiv G turbo petrol engine has up to 254 kW to feed out to the AWD chassis. A juicy 500 Nm of torque is more than adequate for hauling you, the family, and the boat away for those water sports events over summer.
Then the other variant is the mild-hybrid diesel. If you want even more pulling power, then this is the one to go for. This inline 6 e-Skyactiv D turbo diesel engine will happily power your journeys, with its capable 187 kW of power and 550 Nm of torque at the ready. It will even sprint the 0–100 km/h dash in an effective 8.3 seconds. Where this model really shines is in fuel efficiency and superbly smooth and relaxed cruising ability, with or without towing the boat.
Incidentally, both of the Mazda CX-70 mild Hybrid SUV variants can tow a trailer that weighs up to 2.25 tonnes. And if you want to take the road less travelled, you can with the CX-70’s Off-Road mode. Optimising the AWD system and traction control system for better grip on gravel, snow, and uneven terrain, this is an AWD that’s got your back in all conditions. The Off-Road Traction Assist ensures that power is distributed to the wheel that needs it most, always working to keep you fully in control.
There are two model variants for either of the mild hybrid engines. The GT boasts leather seats with powered adjustment front and rear. There is also a memory function for the driver, and both front and rear seats can be heated if you so desire. A lovely panoramic sunroof and 21-inch black metallic alloys complete the wonderfully luxurious CX-70 GT experience. If you go for the Azami, then the already amazing GT experience just goes up a notch. The Azami’s full Nappa leather upholstery is gorgeous, while the 360-degree around-the-vehicle view is a welcome system for close quarter duels in the shopping car park. It’s also handy for seeing what’s behind the vehicle when backing down a driveway or when moving out of a parallel park. The Azami also sits on a nice set of 21-inch alloys, except these ones have a black machined look.
Make no mistake, the Mazda CX-70 mild hybrid models are luxurious and satisfying to drive. They handle well, cruise effortlessly, and they offer plenty of practical features to make it nice to live with. Boot space is massive, and the SUV has been designed in such a way that the rear seats are folded flat with a simple pull of a button – great if you’re struggling with an awkward load. The luggage is easy to get in and out of the cargo area thanks to its perfectly flat floor. A powered tailgate gets the onlookers impressed. Safety is top shelf; so too is the level of technology and infotainment.
So, there you have it in a nutshell. The 2024 Mazda CX-70 mild-hybrid SUV is one SUV I’d be queuing up to buy, particularly if you are wanting a larger SUV with space for passengers and luggage. I love the fit and finish, the sporty engine, and those awesome vibrant colours.
