Harping on about fun drives without masses of power under the hood might be one of my potty interests but, with the Mazda MX-5, it’s always been the way Mazda have created this little roadster – normally aspirated responsive power.  It mightn’t be fire-breathing, but the car is loaded with “smiles for the miles” and, as a summer drive, there are few cars that can match the simple fun-factor legacy that the MX-5 has carved itself.

As a two-seater convertible, the new MX-5 RF loves to take its top off at every opportunity to capture the sun rays.  Bendy roads are an MX-5 forte, and the sparkling handling is top-notch.  Two engines are available: the 1.5-litre petrol and the 2.0-litre petrol with 98 kW and 120 kW respectively.  There isn’t a huge lot of difference between the two engines as far as responsive performance goes but the extra few kW under the bonnet of the 2.0-litre are enough to make it feel a little quicker.  It also comes with a limited-slip diff as standard.  Otherwise both the 1.5 and 2.0 models are pretty much identical in the specs department.  You can choose between a six-speed manual and six-speed auto for powering the drive.  The six-speed manual is a slick unit that has lightweight, short and accurate short-throw gear shifts.

At the push of a button the roof can be retracted in no time at all – well a few seconds, anyway.  Advanced technology has made the retractable fastback roof of the new Mazda MX-5 RF one of the quickest folding roofs in the business.  Three roof modules are quick to fold the roof back in style while you enjoy the warmth of the sun on the skin.

Being seated in the Mazda MX-5 cockpit is really enjoyable.  You are low down, and Mazda’s way of serving up the switchgear and instrumentation is crisp and simple.  Easy-to-read and simple-to-use is the best way for offering switchgear, infotainment and technology.  As the driver, you can get on and enjoy the drive.  At one with the car, from the driver’s seat you are in direct contact with the way the car feels – literally from the seat of your pants.

Interior features include the Multimedia Commander knob, located between the driver and passenger seat, which allows you to operate the infotainment and connectivity systems.  A 7-inch touch screen in the centre of the dash puts you in touch with all the entertainment and information systems.  Leather sports seats, electric windows and a Bose audio system with some of the speakers positioned in the headrest keep the driving experience excellent.

Out on the road, the 50:50 weight spread between front and rear axles gives rise to some beautifully crisp and flowing handling characteristics.  The new SKYACTIV-CHASSIS delivers exceptional handling and stability.  Remaining nimble, the Mazda MX-5 RF also boasts a comfortable ride that soaks up the bumps confidently.

The latest active and passive safety systems on-board the latest Mazda MX-5 work together to avoid collisions – they also protect in the event of a collision.  High beam control, adaptive front headlights, blind spot monitoring, and lane departure warning are among the list of excellent safety features.  Dynamic stability control, traction control and hill start assist are other key features.

Luxury MX-5 models boast an array of quality features for your drive.  Heated seats, rain sensing wipers, smart keyless entry, a limited-slip diff, LED daytime running lights, climate control air-conditioning, cruise control, an adjustable speed limiter, a Multimedia Commander, integrated Bluetooth with steering wheel-mounted controls, Internet app integration for internet radio, Facebook and Twitter and DAB radio.
