Wonderfully crafted, the 2017 Mercedes Benz S-Class Coupe is a standout luxury coupe that is highly desirable, exotic and, yes, expensive. But you do get what you pay for when it comes to premium items – and the new S-Class Coupe is one of those items which won’t disappoint nor age quickly at all. As a coupe, the new S-Class range has plenty of razzmatazz for glitzy nights on the town. You will be noticed in this low-slung two-door coupe.
Three engines are available for powering the lovely new Mercedes Benz S-Class Coupe, but we’ll talk more about the power of the beast in a moment. For now, let’s just see what a standard 2017 S-Class Coupe is kitted out with. There are some additional extras one can opt for, but in standard form the luxury coupe comes with an interior air-balance package that delves into aromatherapy’s ability to create a special atmosphere for this luxury coupe machine. The vehicle interior can be fragranced according to individual preferences, and there is a choice of four high-quality interior fragrances: Nightlife Mood, Downtown Mood, Sports Mood and Freeside Mood.
Ambience lighting offers a system that dims or brightens the cabin lighting according to preferences. Welcome-aboard lighting and welcome-home lighting have their benefits and are a very classy touch for the S-Class Coupe interior. The automatic climate control system provides an individual on-board atmosphere of well-being with two climate zones and three-climate styles. The rear seats can be heated at the touch of a button. Front seat occupants have a heating/cooling function along with venting and massage capability. Thanks to the front seats boasting inflatable air chambers, the active multicontour seats with the Energizing massage function and drive dynamic function ensure the best possible seating comfort and outstanding lateral support for front seat occupants.
Other standard features you’ll find in the new 2017 Mercedes Benz S-Class Coupe include: The COMAND online functions which can be controlled intuitively with the touch-pad that is integrated in the hand-rest on the central control unit, a panoramic roof, a Keyless Go system (which conveniently opens, starts and locks the vehicle – just by carrying the electronic key), hands-free automatic boot opening, Head-Up Display, nappa leather upholstery, a 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel, a 360 degree camera and display, speedtronic cruise control, a 13-speaker Burmester surround sound system with 590 Watts, DAB and Digital Radio, a high-definition instrument cluster (with TFT, colour and ECO Display), a media interface that links to iPod and iPhone systems, automatic dual-zone climate control, a central control system mechanism built into the hand-rest, and a TV tuner. As you can see you this is a very luxurious and seductive coupe, but it’s what one would expect Mercedes Benz to create!
Without hesitation the 2017 Mercedes Benz S-Class Coupe draws attention and has all the style you could want when driving down the Boulevard. There are more options available if you would like, and these include a high-end Burmester 3D surround sound system with 24 speakers – would you believe – and a pumping 1520 Watt sound, an LED intelligent light system with special Swarovski crystals, Nightview Assist – which illuminates the road even more at night, a panoramic roof with Magic Sky Control, AMG designer nappa leather interiors, and a comprehensive Head-up display.
There is a real sense of well-being when driving the new Mercedes Benz S-Class Coupe. It’s kind of like having your very own personal bodyguard, except this one has four wheels. All the best safety features are on-board the latest S-Class Coupe, but there are some standout features that work hard to keep all occupants as safe as they can be. Active Park Assist, Active Blind Spot, Lane Assist, automatic braking – with a hold function, optimum airbag safety, a driver fatigue warning system, emergency braking and even crosswind assist.
Even if you find yourself a passenger in the rear seats of the new S-Class Coupe, there is premium comfort. Excellent legroom and space for tall adults is a given, so you won’t be cramped. If there is one area the S-Class Coupe could work on, it is in the amount of luggage space you’ll find in the boot – 400 litres seems a little small for a car of this calobour and class.
Hurtling down the motorway in an S-Class Coupe is something very special indeed. The interior is so quiet, and the ride so smooth and comfortable. Start to throw the RWD S-Class Coupe through the corners and the car responds with excellent levels of grip and control. The suspension has various settings that can be selected at the push of a button, and the car boasts air suspension – only the best will do! As the car weighs in around 2 tonnes, the ride quality is exceptional over any road surface.
What powers the beast comes down to which variety of petrol engine you want to be lurking under the hood. All of these engines are capable of completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in less than five seconds, so there is definitely no lack of power – even in the base model – the S 500. The Mercedes Benz S500 utilizes the power of a V8, 4.7-litre engine with 335 kW and 700 Nm. An electronically controlled top speed of 210 km/h seems a bit tame for this beast, but few will ever be using this top speed anyway – unless they are on a race track. You should be able to get below 10 litres/100 km if you are light on the right foot. This model has the nice 9 G-Tronic automatic gearbox which is so smooth. An Eco Start/Stop function is standard.
Next comes the mighty Mercedes Benz S63 AMG Coupe with its 5.5-litre V8 motor boasting 430 kW and 900 Nm. Power is laid out on the road via a 7 G-Tronic speedshift automatic gearbox. Limited to 250 km/h, you’ll be going super quick in an instant. Expect around 11 litres/100 km on average for a light right foot.
If only the fastest will do, then the new S 65 AMG will be the model to go for, and with a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4.1 seconds, there are few cars that will be quicker on the road. Under the hood is a mammoth V12 engine with 1000 Nm of torque that is found from 2300 rpm through to 4300 rpm. With speed comes a bigger thirst, however, and you can average around 15 litres/100 km. But, if you are lucky enough to own one of these, then the fuel bill is unlikely to concern you.
Sheer class comes with the 2017 Mercedes Benz S-Class Coupe domain, and it is definitely one of the best modern coupes of its kind on the planet.
