Here is a neat little car that oozes class and drives responsibly in more ways than one. The 2022 Mercedes Benz A-Class Hybrid (A250e) looks great and delivers a premium small-car drive.
Preferences are such a subjective thing but, for me, the latest A-Class from Mercedes Benz is the nicest looking small hatchback on the market. It might be small, but it delivers on so many fronts the sort of drive that just keeps you coming back for more. All the luxury trimmings can be added to the drive if you want to, or you can save a pretty penny and go a little more basic in trim levels. A base A-Class model still gets a decent level of items; it is a Merc after all.
Expect techie-treats like an 8-speaker audio system, an MBUX multimedia system with a 7-inch touchscreen multimedia display, 5 USB-C ports, voice control, Bluetooth connectivity, Mercedes Me connect services, audio with speed compensated volume control, steering wheel controls, streaming audio, a window grid antenna and 2 LCD dash monitors.
Other things like powered windows front and back, front seats that have electronic adjustment and even memory functions are standard on most A-Class models. The 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat makes the little A-Class pretty adept at carrying cargo, and the front and rear cupholders, a proximity key with push button start, remote keyless entry, 2-door curb/courtesy lighting with illuminated entry all add up to making the small Mercedes a special car you’ll appreciate. From anywhere inside the cabin the dash looks amazing, its large and expansive screen centre stage, the driver’s display and the nice snug leather steering wheel all adds to the occasion.
You get plenty of creature comforts as standard, so things like cruise control and steering wheel controls help make the drive relaxed. The voice activated dual-zone front automatic air-conditioning system works a treat, and all the interior trim with piano black console inserts and metal-look interior accents give the small A-Class loads of style. A full cloth headliner and leatherette door trim insert looks sharp, and there is MB-TEX upholstery or leather, which both look and feel attractive while maintaining a lasting quality. Close the door, and even the simple fade-to-off interior lighting keeps you feeling like you’re in an exotic environment, particularly with the little Merc’s ambient lighting features.
Boot space in the Mercedes Benz A-Class Hatchback is impressive. It’s up there with the class leaders. There is even concealed storage space under the boot’s floor. Around 355 litres of space is available in a boxy dimension, this amount available when the rear seats are in place. Offering 420 litres of space, the A-Class sedan’s boot is actually larger than the hatch, so you might like to reconsider styles. Rear seat passengers in either style will be impressed with the amount of leg room, and the high ceiling cleverly accommodates taller adults.
The 2022 Mercedes Benz A-Class offers an array of engines for you to choose from. These are the same for the sedan as well as the hatchback. A180 versions get a 1.3-litre ULP linked to a 7-speed auto. A250 models get a 2.0-litre petrol with ULP or PULP choices and 7-speed autos. A35 and A45 versions get increased power enhancements from their 2.0-litre motors and 7-speed (A35) or 8-speed (A45) gearbox choices.
But it’s the A250 E PHEV/Hybrid version that I’m most interested in here. This is an impressively lively and quiet powerplant. The 1.3 Turbo combines with electric power to have a maximum output of 160 kW. That’s quite an offering for a small hatch or sedan. It delivers a stealthy drive that excites. Mercedes suggest that you’ll see lower than 2 litres/100 km a lot of the time, particularly when pottering about town, which this does very well indeed. It’s also good for the health, as emissions are as low as 34g/km CO2, thanks to lots of electric power around town.
The Hybrid A-Class really comes to life when you want it to, seeing off the 0-100 km/h dash in around seven seconds flat. Having the battery pack and electric motors adds to the car’s overall weight, being close to 200 kg more than a standard A250. But then the ride of the hybrid A-Class feels well-planted, and there are acceptable levels of body roll. With its electrified powertrain, the 2022 Mercedes Benz A-Class PHEV hatchback can reach speeds of up to 235 km/h, so this is no slouch.
The new Mercedes A250e is the plug-in hybrid version of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, and it’s the smallest electrified vehicle that the German brand has introduced to its EQ line-up so far. Based on a space-efficient front-drive platform, the 2022 Mercedes Benz A-Class does well in providing for passengers and their luggage. The A-Class drives with the poise and comfort, and safety, quality, comfort and equipment levels are all up to expected Mercedes Benz standards.
