Smooth, sleek, silent, sophisticated and stylish – just a few words that sum up the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan, the latest all-electric offering from this luxury European marque. Its full official name is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS EQS53 AMG Auto 4MATIC+, but dealers will know what you mean if you refer to the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan.
And it certainly looks worthy of standing alongside some of the lovely luxury offerings that we’ve seen from Mercedes over the years. All eight standard paint colours (and the two optional extra choices) look lovely, allowing hints of chrome trim to be seen here and there – but not on the body-coloured door handles. It sits very pretty indeed on 21-inch wheels and features some scrumptiously sleek curves. It looks like a smooth operator, and it’s not for nothing that other reviewers have referred to this as the “silent assassin” (as an aside, aren’t all assassins silent?). If he didn’t have such a relationship with Aston Martin, this would be a car worthy of James Bond or some other dashing hero(ine). If you want to get very, very technical, this is a five-door hatch, but the body shape is clearly that of a sedan, so that’s what the makers are calling it. Or you could just call it beautiful.
It’s a fully electric luxury sedan, so you could call it a luxury BEV sedan. It features a 484 kW permanent magnet AC electric motor capable of sending this bad boy from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.8 seconds. When driven the ideal way, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan is capable of going 588 km on a single charge of its 107.8 kWh lithium ion battery. This is coupled to Mercedes’ well-known 4MATIC 4×4 drivetrain, meaning that this luxury sedan can give you plenty of grip and traction when you need it, so it wouldn’t be out of place heading up to a ski resort. Charging is accomplished via a standard Type 2 charger, with the AC charging time being 10 hours at 11 kW, with DC fast charging being available as well (this will take 30 mins to get from 10% to 80% with 200 kW and 400 V charging). Regenerative recharging and trickle-charging from a wall socket are also possible, just to keep you purring along nicely.
The sophistication continues on the inside of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan (Nappa leather-trimmed seats and all). Although you won’t quite find a James Bondesque level of gadgetry inside, you’ll certainly find a lot. The digital instrumentation panel is clearly laid out, and if that wasn’t enough, a heads-up display is also available. The GPS with satellite navigation and the voice controls are something that were pure fiction in old movies but are very much a reality in the EQS53 Sedan. Cameras front, side and rear allow for easy parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces, which is assisted by the parking assistance feature (which includes steering assistance and a graphical display) as well as the front and rear parking sensors. Out on the road, active lane keeping assistance, cross-traffic alerts front and rear, collision warnings front and rear, blind spot active assistance, road sign recognition with automatic speed limitation, and the ability to detect and give warning of driver fatigue and distraction make it seem as if the car thinks for itself (although it doesn’t – you’re still well and truly in control and you should enjoy the experience of driving this little piece of luxury). When needed, the ABS brakes with EBD and emergency brake assistance can kick in, along with the electronic stability program, traction control and hill hold driver aids.
It’s unlikely that the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan will ever get into an accident, given this full suite of active driver assistance features, but the unexpected does happen, so it’s good to know that you’ll be fully protected in all five seats with plenty of airbags. The safety system can also automatically call for help in the case of an accident.
Charging for your portable devices is available by wireless recharging or via several USB ports, although bear in mind that this will reduce the driving range. As expected, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS Sedan has full Bluetooth integration and smartphone compatibility (Apple Car Play and Android Auto), which talk to the multifunction full colour touchscreen control panel so that the sounds you want to hear come out of the 15-speaker system. As this is an electrical vehicle without engine noise, the sound system has been designed with an active noise-cancelling function to block out the road noise. The driver and front passenger will ride very comfortably indeed, as these seats come with a delicious massage function – just right for those longer drives. You can adjust the four-zone climate control remotely so the temperature is just right when you get into the vehicle. If you can bear to let people eat and drink inside this beautiful interior, there are plenty of bottle and cupholders strategically placed around the cabin.
