An exciting small hatch that provides both luxury and style is the new front-wheel-drive Mercedes Benz A-Class. For performance maniacs, there is the AWD AMG A45 A-Class version but more about that, later. As has been the case with the new C-Class, the A-Class has a longer, lower appearance with more elegant styling and lovely ride quality. The distinctive diamond grille is gorgeous to look at, and quickly says “Look at me!” Optional LED headlights add even more bravura. With Mercedes, you do pay a premium but if you want the best, then that’s why you’ll end up purchasing the car with the three-pointed star.
The German brand has been making a steady improvement on its reliability standings, and recent surveys suggest that new Mercedes Benz cars are some of the most reliable European cars on the market. Looking out for a very classy, roomy, small hatch? Then look no further than the all new Mercedes Benz A-Class. There is plenty of engine choice, particularly in petrol guise, and lots of features and packages available to make your ride not only feel great but look amazing.
There is very little argument amongst journalists that new Mercedes Benz cars are extremely stylish; so-much-so that they are a class above their counterpart challengers. Just pull up alongside a new Mercedes, and there is a presence and aura surrounding them. The 2016 Mercedes Benz A-Class has a line-up of petrol variants that are very rewarding small cars to drive. Even the base model A180 has a responsive 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engine that has 90 kW to play with and 200 Nm from as low as 1250 rpm. Running power through to the driving wheels via a slick 7G-DCT automatic transmission, the Mercedes Benz is a benchmark leader in ride and smoothness; just make sure that you stay with the manufacturer rims, as lower profiles can be coercing with ride quality.
An up-rated version of the 1.6-litre unit, the A200, puts out a little more power and twist. A nice compromise between power and efficiency is the A 250 Sport 4MATIC. This petrol engine is quite fast, with the strong 2.0-litre motor putting out very respectable 160 kW and 350 Nm figures. A top speed of 240 km/h is quick, while 0- 100 km/h can be completed in less than seven seconds.
Like BMW and their M Sport models, the Mercedes wouldn’t be without their AMG versions. The performance model for the A-Class is the incredibly fast new Mercedes Benz AMG A45 4MATIC with AWD and 280 kW. Add this to the engine’s 475 Nm of torque from as low as 2250 rpm, and you have a performance king that will shake up many bigger sports cars and their drivers. The AMG version has a limited top speed of 270 km/h and, for an interesting bit of information, the AMG version is the most powerful compact hatch in the world, putting loads of smiles on the lucky driver’s face – especially if they use the 4.2 second 0-100 km/h acceleration time to full use.
Mercedes Benz has, however, enabled the driver to have more say in how the A-Class range rides, having some of the A-Class models, optionally equipped, with adaptive chassis control which is switchable between comfort and sport modes, and a Drive Select system which can be manually changed via the swivel knob on the centre control so that the A-Class boasts Comfort, Sport, Individual and Eco modes means it is a complete small hatch. For a completely modern and dynamic hatch drive, take the A-Class for a run. You can be driving sporty one moment and then laid back and relaxed in comfort mode the next. With one switch of the button, you can be driving so smoothly over rougher town roads.
Inside, the new A-Class colours, textures and materials are fresh and smart, with Mercedes keeping the nice looking three round air vents in the middle of the dash. The crisp, new design for the instrument cluster looks well-dressed and very easy to read. If there is one bug bear of the new A-Class interior design, for me it would be that of the control buttons around the centre dash being too small and hard to read. I like the stand-alone touch display-screen which protrudes out from the dash, and can be angled slightly towards the driver. Apple Car Play allows your smartphone to be connected to the A-Class multimedia system, making it possible to work all your smartphone features via the dash touch display screen. Mirror Link software is also offered to control iPhones and Android devices. Talk about easy and modern to use!
It’s a very nice seating arrangement for the front seat occupants; not only can the seat angles be altered electronically; the seat length can also be changed, resulting in a near perfect fit for all sorts of body shapes and sizes.
Loaded with features and style, the new Mercedes Benz A-Class is a benchmark model.
