As classy as they might be, the Mercedes Benz C-Class Coupe petrol versions provide a practical side to the luxury and performance that these cars give to their owners. Style is written all over the new C-Class Coupe lines, and the creator of the new design has obviously enjoyed their work.
The Sportback design – particularly with the lines flowing over the car’s rear haunches so smoothly – looks so elegant and tasteful. Yet, under the lift gate is a luggage area (400 litres) that will hold reasonable items for the weekend getaway. The middle section of the rear seats can be folded down to take longer, bigger items on-board. Throughout the cabin there are many storage areas for placing drinks, food and items for the journey, while the modern driving aids and safety features are wondrous in the way they keep occupants safe and relaxed.
Driving a car like the new C-Class Coupe is an exciting and rewarding drive. The rear-wheel-drive chassis provides plenty of accuracy and ride comfort, while the mode selection for the chassis set-up gives the driver the opportunity to self-tune the chassis, specifically aimed at the drive they desire. If you want the most amazing ride comfort, the air suspension package is simply brilliant, making a mockery of any road undulations and bumps.
As a top-end medium-size coupe, the luxury Mercedes brand offers the 2016 Mercedes Benz C-Class Coupe petrol versions with the option of two 2.0-litre engines for powering the car. The C200 offers 135 kW of peak power and 300 Nm of torque between 1200 and 4000 rpm. This base level performance is exciting to drive and has a muscle equivalent to many larger engines. Being light and nimble on its feet, the Mercedes Benz C-Class Coupe can use the engine to its fullest potential. Acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h can be ticked off in less than eight seconds, so it is a sporty drive.
Next in the petrol line-up is the higher rated 2.0-litre motor that boosts power output to 180 kW and maximum torque to 370 Nm from 1700 rpm. This is a quick car, putting it at the top of its class for sheer driving pleasure. Both these new C-Class cars are limited to 210 km/h – though, were the limiter removed, they would run on to much higher speeds.
To really rattle the knees of its performance competitors, the Mercedes Benz C-Class Coupe has another trick up its sleeve. To rule the medium-size coupe roost, a V8 power plant linked to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission has been placed to drive the Mercedes Benz AMG C 63 S. BMW’s M4 is an out-and-out rival, and Audi’s RS4, but few can match it when it comes to the car’s incredible performance. A 0-100 km/h sprint time of around the 4 second mark (3.9 seconds claimed) and a top speed of 290 km/h, you really are in a mover and a shaker.
Of course, driving a new C-Class Coupe will be a luxurious and state-of-the-art experience. With new multimedia systems and navigation equipment, Bluetooth and an interface with hands-free communications, you are in a modern environment. Cabin ambience is enhanced through cabin lighting, and the leather sport seats are sculptured works of art. Space throughout the cabin is good, though you’re not going to be in the same league as an S-Class for leg room in the rear. Though fine for kids, it is a little tight for taller adults in the rear. Front seat occupants enjoy better comfort, and the electronic adjustment for seat and steering wheel is perfect for getting a really great position for the driver. Satellite navigation and audio control can be worked via the round knob on the central console; and behind that knob is a large compartment for storing stuff inside. When the compartment is closed, the top surface is a nice elbow rest for the driver.
Mercedes offers buyers the chance to individualise their car with a variety of really flash packages. You can even purchase the Air Balance package which enables the C-Class interior to be fragranced to suit individual tastes. There is a choice of four high-quality interior fragrances – according to personal preference and mood.
All-in-all, the new Mercedes Benz C-Class Coupe petrol versions are highly desirable cars. The level of comfort and excitement is about right, so get in and enjoy. Most people will go with the 2.0-litre variants; and with these there is enough fun to be had by most people.
