Mercedes Benz GLS Petrol SUV

At the twist of the knob on the centre console, the drive mode can be selected by the driver for a range of drive modes: Individual, Sport, Comfort, Ice and Rough Terrain.  Each mode has been specially designed to alter the engine response, traction control systems, dampers and suspension set-up to provide the best level of control and ride quality for all occasions.  ADS Plus continuously monitors and controls the damping effect for better adhesion to the road surface and premium ride comfort.  When driving the new Mercedes Benz GLS Petrol models it’s not so much a question of “If one can get through?” but “How?”  Thanks to its permanent all-wheel drive system the GLS SUV has modern tractive forces which can find traction in any dry or wet weather conditions.  Being able to carry on when the tracks get rough is part of the new Mercedes Benz GLS design brief, making it a great outdoors companion for those who love off-roading adventure.  All-wheel drive provides the GLS SUV with traction when it seems conditions might be impassable.  Wheels with deficient grip are braked in a targeted manner and the drive torque transferred to the wheels with satisfactory traction so that forward progression is unimpeded and smooth.  With these rapid, automatic braking impulses there is no need for the conventional diff-lock.  Boasting a 4MATIC system with a 50:50 ratio between front and rear axles makes for a wonderfully confident and always predictable handling capability over a range of on-road and off-road surfaces.

Out in the rough, the new Mercedes Benz GLS Petrol models match it with the Range Rover, and again the luxury interior is similarly as good, if not better.  Up to seven occupants can enjoy a premium level of comfort and space.  Enter the GLS AWD SUV, and a beautiful ambience inside the warm, full-leather upholstered interior greets you.  If you have a drink in your hand as you climb aboard, the Mercedes Benz GLS provides temperature-controlled cup holders for enabling the enjoyment of a warm coffee or a cool drink on the road.  The easy-entry doors close automatically behind you, and the tailgate is also operated hands-free, enabling luggage to be loaded freely without having to place it down and pick it up ­ way better for the back!  Thermotronic climate control quickly sets the desired cabin temperature for the journey ahead, and you can even pre-warm the GLS cabin prior to climbing aboard.  The climate control is zoned for the three seating rows, so those in the third row can be just as comfortable as those in the first and second rows.

As the driver, you will enjoy an electronically adjustable front seat with four-way lumbar support and heating.  Needless to say that the position behind the steering wheel is very comfortable and one of the best SUV driving experiences.  To make it even easier when you switch drivers, the memory function can easily set your position again, should you take over the driving again.  If you live in a particularly cold area, the heated steering wheel (optional) can warm your hands up nicely.  Both the front passenger and driver electric seats provide a massage function for ultimate driving pleasure.  Don’t think that the rear seats passengers are any less comfortable, because the new Mercedes Benz GLS Petrol SUV comes with heated rear seats, too.

Mercedes Benz GLS Interior

When it comes to on-board entertainment, the Mercedes Benz GLS is loaded.  Comand Online, Digital Radio, a 6-disc DVD changer, a rear seat entertainment system (optional), Harmon Kardon with Logic 7 and a surround sound speaker system, and even a TV tuner for digital TV (optional) is available.  Satellite navigation and hands-free communications are also standard features.

Breath-taking design, style and comfort make the new Mercedes Benz GLS a very premium SUV to ride in.  But all this style with no go would be a disaster so, as one comes to expect from Mercedes, there is plenty of get-up-and-move-it with two petrol engine available.  Both of these are sweet V8 engines, with colossal power and torque as standard.  The Mercedes Benz GLS 500 4MATIC packs 335 kW of peak power and a 700 Nm mammoth torque figure from as low as 1800 through to 4000 rpm.  A limited top speed of 250 km/h and a 0-100 km/h of around the mid fives mean that this model has heaps of power for loads of fun, or for towing the caravan or horse float.

The other GLS Petrol SUV is the mighty AMG version that packs a massive 760 Nm of torque between 1750 and 5250 rpm, while the peak power of 430 kW sees off any of the competition.  Either of the petrol versions are beautiful to ride in, with power available from anywhere in the engine range.  Ride quality is excellent, and the level of control is incredible for such a big SUV wagon.

A standard 680 litres of luggage space, with the three rows of seats in place, means that this Mercedes Benz SUV is massive – and massively practical.  Luggage space can grow to 2300 litres when required.
