Mitsubishi has been doing things fairly quietly of late, with just the introduction of the small Mirage in recent times. One of the stable vehicles with solid sales for the Mitsubishi brand has been the Outlander, and now with a fresh facelift and a few extra details the Mitsubishi Outlander Diesel is an attractive buy for the mid-size SUV customer.
Offering a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel with 4WD, the Outlander feels a capable and well-built machine with plenty of grunt for work and play. The 360 Nm of torque is particularly prevalent in the low-to-mid range, and then the 110 kW at a maximum 3500 rpm ensures that the power is still plenty as the revs climb. The smooth nature of the engine and solid feel on the road is an inspiring combination to make the drive pleasant and relaxed. Mitsubishi suggests that with the Outlander 4WD Diesel the fuel consumption ends up between 6 and 7 litres/100 km – which is about average for this type of vehicle. Being 4WD, the grip levels are excellent, and the ride secure in all situations. The six-speed automatic gearbox shifts cleanly and smoothly through the gears while feeling eager to drop down a gear-or-two when an extra bit of power and acceleration is required.
Electronically controlled AWD provides excellent grip off-road too, and with Mitsubishi knowing a thing-or-three about AWD systems, the new Outlander 4WD Diesel is great for taking yourself (and the kids) fishing. If you find yourself with a challenging track to negotiate, the Outlander responds extremely well and has good ground clearance for climbing in and out of moderate ruts. It handles surprisingly well with any slippery clay track.
Family trips away will be a pleasure with the Outlander’s ability to swallow plenty of luggage and seat five in comfort. There is also an extra two seats in the third room which is great for kids but a little small for a large adult. The high grade interior looks stylish; and, in keeping with today’s standards, a simple, smart 6.1-inch touch screen displays a number of in-car functions like the view from the reversing camera, audio display and air-conditioning functions. Being equipped with reversing sensors means that the driver of the Outlander Diesel should have little chance of backing into the parked car behind – don’t you love today’s technology! Sadly, it won’t prevent another vehicle from doing it to you, at least not yet. A multi-function steering wheel with cruise control and a hands-free phone system with paddle shifters keeps some of the handy features at the driver’s fingertips. Dual-zone climate control makes for a pleasant temperature inside the cabin.
Some of the other features that I think are worth a mention (because they are cool everyday user-friendly items) would have to be the keyless operating system with a one touch start, rain sensing wipers and a six-speaker surround-sound audio system with Bluetooth connectivity for live streaming and communications.
Each new Mitsubishi Outlander 4WD Diesel comes with fog lamps, roof rails, wide LED headlamps with LED Daytime running lights and 18-inch alloys. The Outlander has an upmarket feel to the way the vehicle functions in everyday life, and the high level of safety features combined with a high level of solid grip on the road keeps you feeling safe and confident. One of the nice features about driving the new Outlander 4WD Diesel is that it is easy to drive in urban streets but excellent, too, on the open road.
A great all-rounder that is a worth serious consideration: the new Mitsubishi Outlander Diesel.
