The striking new 2020 Nissan Qashqai is a pretty good-looking, dynamic and sophisticated compact SUV. It has some pretty efficient aerodynamics, plenty of intelligent technologies to aid and enhance your driving experience, and the seat comfort is rather nice – especially in premium ST-L and Ti models. Good deal then? Yes, and let’s see why.
On entry, the Qashqai delivers a smart, functional interior which you feel well apart of. As the driver, the dash design wraps around you and all the switchgear is within easy reach. The flowing dash design is nice and balanced, and you get a really nice looking, as well as tactile, steering wheel with multi-function buttons for certain features. Chrome inserts on the luxury models do look great against the soft touch plastics and leather trim.
On the road there is great visibility for drivers, the seats are comfortable and the ride excellent. Bumpy city streets are no problems for the well-sorted new Nissan Qashqai suspension, and the steering is light around town – but heavier for the open road and its higher travel speeds. Manual gearbox models get a nice gear change that’s slick and direct. The CVT auto versions are smooth and pretty decent. Loads of stopping power gives confident braking, and the 2.0-litre, petrol motor is responsive and well-suited for this “compact SUV” type of vehicle. Extra sound-proofing has meant that on the open road the new Qashqai ride is quieter, too.
Practical features like space and storage get a decent tick. There is handy door storage for even a large water bottle, and centre console cubby holes are pretty decent. Auxiliary and charging points are located in the centre console, cup holders front and rear, a 12V port and more useful space in front of the gear lever, and the glove box has space for a couple of packets of chips and chocolate.
Back seat passengers have good space for legs and heads. If you are tall, then the window seats will be the better options for you – as the middle seat is raised slightly, and you will have head space issues. Qashqai models that come equipped with the moonroof also lessen the amount of head space in the back; but just check that out to make sure you’re happy there.
Boot space is decent. Underfloor storage is present. You get about the same volume as what’s in a Corolla or Golf, and so you’ll have no hassles carrying plenty of luggage on the long weekend getaway. Of course, the rear seats can be folded flat with split folding versatility, so you’re sorted there. A configurable boot partition is a nice feature that means you can load awkward sized shopping bag that are loaded with veges and fruit, and they won’t roll around as much as when you don’t use this item. It’s a nice thoughtful feature.
So, the 2020 Nissan Qashqai starts the ball rolling with the ST model which boasts Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, a rear-view camera, Intelligent Emergency Braking, a leather-accented steering wheel and shift knob, and 17-inch alloy wheels.
Next comes the Nissan Qashqai ST+, and here you add an Intelligent Around-View Monitor with Moving-Object Detection, satellite navigation with live-traffic alerts, a 7-inch colour touch-screen display with Digital Radio (DAB+), power-folding heated door mirrors with LED indicators and privacy glass – all rather nice!
You really start to step up a gear when you slip into the new Nissan Qashqai ST-L, however, because here you get those premium seats with exceptional comfort, part-cloth-part-leather accented seat trim, heated front seats, a 6-way power-adjustable front driver seat, roof rails, a BOSE stereo and 18-inch alloy wheels.
The range topper is called the Nissan Qashqai Ti, and on-board this compact SUV you get gorgeous seats with imprinted Nappa leather designs and accentuated stitching. They are hugely comfortable and adjust nicely with the rake and reach steering wheel adjustment. Features like Intelligent Cruise Control, Intelligent-Lane Intervention, a panoramic glass roof and hot-looking 19-inch alloy wheels keep you looking and feeling very classy.
Both the ST-L and Ti Qashqai versions come with a larger infotainment touchscreen. They also feature climate control, keyless entry, cameras that capture the full 360 degree view around the car, and front and rear parking sensors. Nappa leather and BOSE sound systems are the real step up, and you feel like you are driving a pretty special luxury compact SUV.
The 2020 Nissan Qashqai really is one of the nicest looking new compact SUVs currently on our roads. Having had a bit of an exterior lift with sweet looking DRLs and LEDs this new model does impress – the rear of the car looking very nice and sharp with its angular taillights. Around the front you get a very nice headlight/grille association going on, and it really is a compelling compact SUV design.
