Nissan’s fine range of Navara double cab utes are new for 2021. They are available in a 2.3DT Diesel with a 6-speed manual RWD, 2.3DTT Diesel with a 7-speed automatic RWD, a 2.3DTT Diesel 7-speed automatic 4×4 and a 2.3DTT Diesel 6-speed manual 4×4. They offer their owner a fine and efficient engine, plenty of practicality and safety. The 2021 Nissan Navara Utility Dual Cab in 4×4 guise is a tough customer and purpose-built for tackling any Outback Terrain. You won’t be finding much that can bog down this strong 4×4 unit, and the impressive cabin comfort make it a proper choice among a market of utes. You can also get the Navara in a Single Cab form, but we’ll look at that one in depth another time.
For now, we’ll look at the range of dual cab options, where you’ll find four trims and configurations to choose from. Offering either a 4×2 alternative or a dual-range 4×4 with the choice of two 2.3-litre diesel engines, you have a strong package for both work and play. There is a single-turbo diesel that produces 120 kW of power and 403 Nm of torque. This is a smooth motor that pulls really well. Then there is the twin-turbo diesel with 140 kW and 450 Nm. The added punch of the twin turbo ensures that you can tow a fully loaded braked tandem trailer up to 3.5 tonnes no problems. The new Navara is available with a tough six-speed manual or a smooth seven-speed automatic gearbox.
All new Navara Dual Cabs boast the practicality of having four doors, so when you need to take the family or work colleagues along for the ride, then it caters for passengers no problems. Dual-zone air conditioning has the cabin set nicely for all and people get bottle holders present in the front and rear doors, as well as cup holders front and rear. The new Navara has cruise control on all variants, so there is no need for embarrassing yourself in a shower of blue light in front of the kids or the boss. There are some storage compartments in the centre console, in and around the dash and under the back seats. Even the base model gets an Aux Input Socket (MP3/CD/Cassette), USB port, an Input for an iPod, Bluetooth, a multi-function infotainment touchscreen and a six speaker stereo. Above the base models you get DAB+ digital radio and satellite navigation.
Holding a 5-star ANCAP safety rating sets this up as a safe ute for all occasions. All models have as standard 7 airbags, ABS (Antilock Brakes), Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, Alert and Warning for potential Forward Collisions, Crash Detection and Avoidance with Braking, Driver Attention Detection (or lack there of), Parking Assistance with a Graphical Display, Driver Fatigue Warning, EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution), Hill Holder Assist, Trailer Sway Correction, a Rear Camera, and Automatic (light sensitive) Halogen Headlamps.
One of the things about the 2021 Nissan Navara Dual Cab utes is that all road-oriented versions get a coil-spring rear suspension, which makes for a great ride. The workhorse variants of the Navara Dual Cab use leaf springs at the rear. The range includes SL, ST, ST-X and the PRO-4X flagship which gets macho looks and an upgraded interior with part-leather seats.
Any of the new Navaras will manage well under 8.5 litres/100 km regularly, so having the extra oomph of the twin turbo diesel doesn’t affect the economy much at all. A 5 year/unlimited km warranty and a 5-year roadside assistance package comes with each new Navara.
The Mitsubishi Triton, the Toyota Hilux, Mazda BT, Isuzu DMax, the VW Amarok and the Ford Ranger are some of the other hard core utes that would only be too happy to take down the new kid on the block Navara just a peg or two; however, the 2021 Nissan Navara Dual Cab ute has strong practicality, decent engines, nice seat comfort, and nice attention to detail, which a serious and discerning ute buyer won’t turn a blind eye to. It’s also not too expensive to buy new, and then with the tremendous off-road ability of the rugged PRO-4X all bases are covered well.
