Bantam roosters. Chihuahuas. Napoleon Bonaparte. They may be small, but they’re feisty and aggressive, ready to take on the world. The same could be said about the Opel Corsa OPC, the most diminutive member of the prestigious Opel Performance Centre (OPC) range. But unlike a Chihuahua, the Opel Corsa OPC really does have some bite to go with the spunky attitude.
Other small cars may look as good as the Opel Corsa OPC – although other small 1.6-litre engines don’t usually have the aggressive sporty styling seen in the twin headlights, the triangular chrome exhaust or the sleek side-on silhouette. Usually, little hatches like this are “granny cars”. Not this one – unless the granny in question is a motoring enthusiast (and who says you can’t be both??). Staid, boring and frumpy the Opel Corsa OPC isn’t. It’s a chilli pepper. It’s a firecracker. And it’s got the performance to match the styling.
The Opel Corsa OPC has a 1.6 litre petrol engine. Now, if the engine size is all that someone sees at the lights and think that they’ll be able to get away from this little hatchback when the light turns green easily, they are in for a shock. They are also about to learn just what OPC means. With 141 kW of power and 260 Nm of torque waiting to be unleashed by this turbocharged unit, the Opel Corsa OPC should be able to leave nearly every other hatchback in town behind – plus a number of larger cars with bigger engines!
The Opel Corsa OPC isn’t about people carrying or pragmatics. It’s about driving pleasure and enjoyment. It’s about performance. This is why the Opel Corsa OPC has been fitted with all the high-performance features. The chassis on the Opel Corsa OPC has been lowered but it is still the high-quality OPC chassis that was tested and trialled on the (in)famous Nürburgring. Finely tuned disk brakes front and back ensure that you’re fully in control, as does the ESP and the traction control. The Opel Corsa OPC will go exactly where the leather-wrapped multifunction OPC-exclusive steering wheel tells it to go.
The Opel Corsa OPC is a small car, so there’s one person the designers have kept in mind the whole time: the driver. You are likely to be driving the Opel Corsa OPC alone (or with one other passenger – there are rear seats in the Opel Corsa OPC but they work best for tossing jackets onto rather than carrying people on a regular basis). But no matter how you take the corner, the supportive Recaro bucket seats will keep you sitting pretty in the best driving position. Climate control keeps you comfortable temperature-wise, while you can also use the steering wheel to communicate with the audio system (which has USB input and iPod compatibility) and the phone. The translucent rings and OPC logo that make up some of the most notable features of the interior styling, but with a car this quick and powerful, it’s best to admire these when you’re at a standstill!
