Peugeot offers the latest version of the 308 Hatch for 2018. The haven’t deviated from the successful styling of the outgoing model much at all, so the newer technology, and equipment ensures the latest 308 Hatch keeps things ticking over nicely for this popular brand.
So what’s new for the 2018 Peugeot 308 Hatch? Well, you’d be forgiven if you thought that the exterior hadn’t changed an awful lot because it is very similar to the previous model. But what has changed on the outside of the car is the grille has been enlarged and detailed with a new lattice design. The front bumper has also been changed to house bigger, deeper air foils in the lower front air dam. Slip around to the rear of the car and the tail lights take on Peugeot’s new LED claw design which is eye catching – particularly when you flick the lights on for night driving. Peugeot 308 Hatch Allure models boast a very nice option in the form of the panoramic glass roof which draws lovely natural light into the stylish 308 cabin.
Current Peugeot cars look classy and have a design edge over the competition. One area of note is the beautiful 308 interiors which always look so nice with their blend of dark leather and chrome detailing. Tactile surfaces are soft and alluring, while the instrument cluster is unique in that it sits above the top of the steering wheel. Now offering a larger 9.7-inch infotainment screen, the 308’s interior does look very modern and positive. Where the 308 Hatch feels particularly luxurious is in the Allure models where the gorgeous leather seats are stitched with accented red thread. Storage space inside a 2018 308 Hatch is good. You have a reasonable sized glovebox, centre console cubby hole for phones in front of the gear lever, and door bins which will swallow water bottles easily.
You do feel very comfortable and special when driving in either the Active or Allure versions. Wide alloys, a racey body kit, leather sport seats and full LED headlights give the high-spec version a nice sporty flavour. Full sportiness does come in the form of the Peugeot 308 GTi versions which are very quick cars in their own right.
Advancements in technology sees the bigger 9.7-inch display screen standard. Phone, music, map, messaging, live streaming are all features that are standard. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Mirror Link and satellite navigation are features everyone will be happy to have, and with the 308 these features are standard.
Even Peugeot 308 Active models come with dual-zone climate control, automatic headlights and automatic wipers. Their interiors are comfortable and roomy, perfect for a family day out at the zoo or weekend away with the relatives. Peugeot 308 Allure models get a few extra items like 17-inch alloys, front and rear parking sensors, power wing mirrors and sport styled front seats.
Boot space is good for swallowing a decent amount of luggage – 470 litres with the rear seat backs in place – making it way more capable of carrying cargo compared with Golf and Focus equivalents. The leg room in the rear is a little tighter compared with some of its rivals, however. Head room is great, and there are rear seat cup holders, a central arm rest and nice large storage pockets on the back of the front seats. Easy-to-use Isofix points for kiddie seats makes life so easy for when you have to take small people with you.
Unlike in Europe the range of engines that are offered for powering the new Peugeot 308 Hatchbacks are limited to just one diesel and one petrol option, with the 1.5 HDI diesel being the most frugal in the range. Allure models get the diesel engine which has 110 kW available along with 370 Nm. This is quicker than the petrol alternative, while also offering excellent fuel economy around 4-to-6 litres /100 km on average and depending where and how you drive.
Peugeot makes some of the best 3-cylinder turbo petrol engines which deliver strong power and excellent fuel economy. Linked to a six-speed automatic gearbox, the turbocharged electronic multipoint direct injection 1.2-litre 3-cylinder motor boasts variable valve timing on both the inlet and exhaust valves. Power is rated at 96 kW, enabling the car to scamper through the 0-100 km/h sprint in a modest 11.0 seconds and onto a top speed of 200 km/h.
On the road, the new Peugeot 308 Hatch is very keen and agile, while ride comfort is a strong point of the 308 chassis set-up.
This is a very worthy contender in the family hatch arena. The car is five-star safe, nice to drive and equipped with all the best modern features.
