We’ve got to hand it to Peugeot as there designs do stand out from the crowd. Park up in a new 2019 Peugeot 508 Touring wagon in any common city parking space, and the 508 has those lines, those curves and the striking details that make it so attractive. It’s a more interesting design than any of its major rivals can offer.
Genuinely good looking on the outside, the latest 508 station wagon attracts attention with its sword like DRLs that sweep down the front corners on the vertical. At the rear is one of the classiest finishes you’ll find anywhere in the sport wagon world – with twinkling rear lights on start-up, twin exhausts and a glossy, streamlined finish: so that’s your heads up! Being a touring wagon the car offers excellent interior space for passengers and luggage; however, the lines also suggest a wagon that is swift, confident and attractive.
Inside the 508’s cabin is a really well put together design with loads of style, luxury and comfort. Again, you’ll find the Peugeot 508 Touring to be really classy inside – particularly in the higher end GT and GT-Line models with lavish stitched leather, a streamlined dash and all the modern technology. Heated seats and massage functions all make the driving experience more upmarket. A beautiful steering wheel beckons the driver into what is an intimate connection with the car’s dynamic handling and strong road holding. The multi-function steering wheel is chunky and solid with a soft touch leather surround for that sensory connection.
Behind the wheel is a high definition digital display for a variety of displays that feature, not least, the digital speed reading. Sitting inside the Peugeot 508 Touring cockpit is engaging and special – something that can be lacking in many 508 rivals – including even the great three German cars. Soft touch plastics and leathers, along with beautiful wooden veneer inlays keep the 508 interior stunning. The highline leather seats are absolutely comfortable and very stylish to the eye and nice to the touch.
There are four Peugeot 508 Touring trims available in Europe, with all four getting the i-cockpit 12.3-inch display. Dual-zone climate control, parking sensors and a touchscreen with satellite navigation are features found in even the base model versions. We will definitely get the GT version in Australia which is high-end and sporty. All the bells and whistles are on-board as well as the more powerful 1.6 Turbo petrol engine. Exactly which models will be omitted – we’ll just have to wait and see.
Right at the centre of the dash is a very modern infotainment system that has piano keyboard type function buttons running along the base of the touchscreen. This is definitely classy on the eye, maybe taking a bit to get used to on a practical note – but again really nice and distinctive. Storage facilities are great. Door bins are huge and there is a deep compartment below the front central leather armrests. The glovebox is big and there are two cup holders for those in the front. High-end models offer wireless phone charging and there is Apple CarPlay and satellite navigation.
Rear seat passengers will enjoy plenty of leg room, and the seat comfort is excellent. Head room is the only quibble, so if you’re tall then make sure you’re sitting in one of the front seats. Over the long haul, the new Peugeot 508 Touring is an immensely polished performer that is more than capable of carrying a fully laden cabin and boot space away for a long weekend. Luggage space in the Touring models is excellent, and the rear tailgate is electric. In Australia we have to deal with really hot summer temperatures, but if you own a new Peugeot the nice cool dual-zone climate control is a real Godsend!
There are two different engine variants that will both make it to Australia. Using the same 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the top of the range Peugeot 508 Touring GT will get the 169 kW engine with 300 Nm of torque. Fuel economy is good, sitting at less than 7 litres/100 km on average. If you don’t need that extra bit of top end power, you can always go for the lower tuned version, which has 133 kW and 250 Nm of torque. This is found in the Allure and GT-Line models. Both engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Europe gets three diesel versions, but sadly it seems unlikely we’ll see all of these
Some excellent but optional equipment includes Peugeot’s Night Vision system which can detect pedestrians and animals up to 200 metres ahead – a first in this segment. The 2019 Peugeot 508 is exceptionally safe, gaining a full five stars in recent Euro NCAP testing.
Since its public unveiling, the all-new Peugeot 508 fastback has seduced many judges around the world thanks to its dynamic qualities, stylish exterior, equipment, interior design and of course its innovative i-Cockpit. Already, it has won 16 international awards. This is a big, beautiful wagon that is going to look superb up anybody’s driveway that’s for sure! If you’re on the lookout for a great sport wagon with hot looks and that extra bit of “Wow” then this is it.
