I’ve really enjoyed some of the special Peugeot designs that we’ve been treated to over the years. Peugeot stands out as being one of those manufacturers which brings along a new striking looking car design on a regular basis. The 2021 Peugeot 3008 has had that same Peugeot finesse brought into the SUV’s tall shape and boxier lines. It’s hard to make a family SUV look cool but Peugeot have managed to rewrite the design book and create a medium-size SUV that looks attractive and sets itself apart from other similar types of vehicles with its cool lines and detailing.
The new 3008 SUV has clean, flowing lines that cut through the air with an efficiency that is often not found on this type of vehicle. So, starting from the back end, a newly designed set of taillights have that signature Peugeot vertical and angular lines in groups of three dazzling up the night sky. Around the side of the car you see a gorgeous set of alloys that capture the eye, some chrome detailing along the sills and different tone coloured under runners where the roof rails run the length of the vehicle. Chrome lines running from the wing mirrors and over the tops of the doors look nice, and then there is a horizontal chrome indentation above the front wheel arch just underneath the bonnet orifice that looks classy.
The walk around the front of the new Peugeot 3008 SUV reveals the most changes, where the bumper has undergone a complete redesign with a striped marking running through the outer edges of the bumper underneath the headlights, almost like a lion has run its claws across the corners of the front bumper, and the look is cool. Higher spec models come with the vertical fang lighting that drops down from the headlights on either side. These are the DRLs as well as the indicators – a very striking feature. The LED head lighting is also new and upgraded. You’ll notice that the new face doesn’t have separate fog lights because these have now been incorporated into the headlight clusters. This is a face that looks unique and is very smart in the way I would say that Lexus has stamped its clarity and distinction on the world of excellent automotive design.
On the inside of the 2021 Peugeot 3008 SUV the look is very similar to the outgoing model, with its own very distinctive layout that delivers gorgeous styling and excellent comfort throughout the cabin. Quality soft-touch materials have been used extensively, and the build quality is superb. I have to say that in this medium-size SUV bracket, the latest 3008 is leading the way in remarkable interior design and quality workmanship. The interior is what you would call ‘Peugeot-classy’, with a universal touchscreen with built in satellite-navigation and dual-zone climate control standard on all models.
There are, however, some new tweaks and offerings with this new 3008, where you can now get a glorious red leather interior, different wood panelling, and a brand new infotainment screen. The system allows for phone connection, where you can run whatever favourite apps you have on your phone through the system for you own info and entertainment. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard on the new 3008 SUV, while traffic live updates is also a handy new feature to have. There is also a wraparound set of manual switches that have a similar look and feel to organ keys. The whole design is very cool and I love it a lot.
Practical cabin space is excellent in this new 3008 SUV. You can fit a big bottle of water in any of the door bins as well as inside the centre console. The front cup holders have been designed to take many kinds of shapes and sizes of cups or cans, a very handy touch from the Peugeot design team. Higher end models get a wireless charging compartment for your phone and there are myriads of handy storage compartments about the cabin. USB and a 12V socket are also situated in the phone compartment.
Front seat occupants will enjoy and awesomely comfortable ride and sitting position. As the driver, you will need to get used to looking over a small steering wheel to where the cool digital driver’s display is situated. There is plenty of head room, so even tall people will find the head space excellent. In the rear of the vehicle, the rear seats deliver great levels of comfort with decent cushion depth and excellent head and leg room for tall people. You can fit three adults across the back without much stress, though the middle seat occupant will have a harder perch to sit on. The middle section of the back rest folds down to provide an armrest and two cup holders. It can also fold to reveal a through-way section where you can poke through a set of skis or a broom handle from the boot cavity area. Two USB points and a 12 V socket are situated below the rear air vents, making life nice and techno-connected for rear seat passengers.
An electric tailgate is available as an option but standard on GT Sport models, and the motion sensor under the rear bumper will open the tailgate when you come trundling up the car’s backend with an arm full of boxes while proceeding to sweep your foot underneath the back end of the car. 590 litres of nice, square cargo space is available under the rear shelf and behind the back seats. There is no load lip for easy access and exiting of luggage when the floor is set to the higher position. The false floor is cool and allows for storing other bits and pieces underneath. The rear seats can be folded down very easily from standing behind the vehicle and reaching through the boot cavity. Honestly, the boot space and flat floor right through to the front seats (1670 litres) is magnificent for this class of vehicle. Tie down points and a 12V socket are in the boot cavity. The 2021 Peugeot 3008 SUV is superbly practical and very well set-up for families and those who need mid-size SUV space and comfort.
Some new tech and features on the 2021 Peugeot 3008 SUV include an integrated fog lamp set inside the new headlamp constellation. Easy access isofix anchorage points are available in the rear seats as well as the front passenger seat. Automatic emergency braking systems detect both pedestrians and cyclists. The Peugeot 3008 also can be equipped with a special night vision safety package which is not available on any of its rivals, making this even more desirable and class leading. This night vision is capable of seeing 200 metres beyond where the headlights visibly light up the road, and it displays this on the screen for the driver to be informed. That is very cool! Autonomous emergency braking, self-parking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist are standard on each model. Five-star safety is present.
The 2021 Peugeot 3008 SUV is FWD only and is available in Allure, GT and GT Sport versions. The Allure and the GT models are available with either a 121 kW/240 Nm six-speed automatic turbo-petrol engine or it can come with the 131 kW/400 Nm 2.0-litre turbo-diesel eight-speed automatic. The diesel is delightful on all accounts. It is very efficient on fuel and delivers exciting performance, handling a fully loaded cabin and boot with ease, as the 400 Nm of torque effortlessly pulls the vehicle along. The eight-speed gearbox is brilliant. Top of the range GT Sport models also use the eight-speed automatic, but it works instead with 133 kW/250 Nm from the uprated turbo-petrol engine.
Ride quality is superbe, magnifique and bumps are soaked up very well. It delivers good grip in enthusiastic driving conditions, although there are one or two mid-SUVs that feel sportier, however not many people buying a classy small-to-medium SUV to get a firm ride and as many Gs as you can get through the corners.
The Allure can be had for around $50k, the GT for a little more and then the GT Sport for around $60k. This is absolutely one of the best mid-size SUVs you can currently buy on the market.
