There are plenty of nice new station wagons you can buy in 2024, but when it comes to the wagon world, there is one in particular that catches my eye. Peugeot’s 2024 508 Hybrid GT Wagon is the one for me. There is so much to like about it, so let’s dive straight into it.
First there is the 508 wagon’s design that really does stand out. Those lines, those curves, and the striking exterior details make it really interesting from any angle, providing it with genuinely good looks. The roofline is long and low, giving the wagon the look of stealth and speed. An update in 2023 means it’s better looking than ever. There are new slim headlights with three vertical claw-like daytime running lights and a cool front grille that blends into the bodywork. At the rear is one of the classiest finishes you’ll find anywhere, with those twinkling rear lights on start-up, twin exhausts, and a glossy, streamlined finish. The car is fitted with some sweet-looking 18-inch alloys that fill out the wheel arches really well.
So, this is an 8-speed automatic front-wheel-driven hybrid station wagon, with performance being brisk and capable, thanks to the hybrid powerplant that boasts DOHV, VVT, and Turbo technology on the ULP-fuel side of things, as well as an electric motor to fill in the gaps for power and efficiency. The result is crisp acceleration (0-100 km/h, 8.3 seconds), strong torque across the range (peaking with 300 Nm @ 3000 rpm), a maximum power of 133 kW, and a top speed of 250 km/h. With a full battery pack, the 508 Hybrid Wagon can go around 50 kilometres on electric power alone, so this will be very handy for the school run and the work commute through town.
On the motorway, you’ll find the Peugeot 508 Hybrid Wagon a pleasurable touring companion that cruises along quietly and comfortably at any speed. While not matching other premium marques for out-and-out performance, this estate is amply swift and yet wonderfully relaxing. The front seats are exceptionally comfortable, and the Peugeot Wagon is competent when it comes to tackling twisty sections of road.
In town, the style draws the looks. It is feels like a long beast, so fortunately the 508 Station Wagon comes with parking sensors front and rear and a rear-view camera to make parking tasks simple for anybody. Its light steering helps with low-speed manoeuvring, as does the funky small steering wheel.
Being a Touring Wagon the, 508 offers decent levels of space for passengers and luggage. The boot has a capacity of 530 litres behind the rear seats, which is not as large as a Skoda Superb Estate (660 litres), but it is still a handy shape to fill. If you need more room for luggage, the rear seat backs fold forwards, creating up to 1780 litres of space to fill.
Inside the 508’s elegant cabin is a quality feel with loads of style, plenty of luxury, and, of course, comfort. A lavish stitched leather upholstery, the streamlined dash, and all the modern technology give the wagon a special travelling experience. Heated seats and massage functions, climate control, a multi-function steering wheel with soft touch leather, and all the infotainment functions help to keep everybody happy on a long trip.
Behind the steering wheel is high-definition digital presentation, which is called Peugeot’s i-cockpit design and is a 12.3-inch digital display. Right at the centre of the dash is a modern infotainment system that has piano-type function buttons running along the base of the touchscreen. The style is one that I like, and it also makes using on-board features nice and easy. The 2024 Peugeot Wagon models now get the upgraded 10.0-inch infotainment display as standard. It’s a decent upgrade over the old 8.0-inch unit, boasting crisp, clear graphics and a fast response to function changes. It is classy, nice and distinctive. Wireless phone charging and connection, ample music listening thanks to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and satellite navigation are just some of the goodies in the Peugeot Tourer. Some excellent optional equipment includes Peugeot’s Night Vision system, which can detect pedestrians and animals up to 200 metres away – a first in this segment.
Also, the Peugeot 508 Hybrid Wagon is exceptionally safe, gaining a full five stars in Euro NCAP testing. Each new model comes with five-years of roadside assistance and a 5 year/unlimited km warranty, and Peugeot promise some pretty long servicing intervals to go with it.
This is a beautiful wagon that is going to look superb up anybody’s driveway. If you’re on the lookout for a great wagon with that extra wow factor, then this is it. And it’s nice to still see a lion on a car emblem; a little reminiscent of the no-longer-with-us Holden HSVs.
