Peugeot have their very popular new 207 model that seems to have agreed with a number of the public. The nice styling is sleek and very grown up for what is Peugeot’s smallest new car for Australia.
Not only does the Peugeot 207 have nice, distinct styling on the outside, if you take a look on the inside, the little 207 has a grand interior that is the best looking in its class. With an emphasis on quality, comfort and energy, a new range of spunky interior trims is available on the latest 207. The seat trim in the XR is black ‘Chilico’ woven fabric, while the XT seat trim is black ‘Spa’ woven fabric. Black mistral leather trim is available as an option on the XT while it becomes standard on the Sportium model – and might I say it makes the 207 rather stunning.
Air-conditioning and cruise control are standard on all Peugeot 207 models (except the XR manual); while three point seat belts are standard in the rear. If you like a sporty flavour, then you are going to fall in love with Sportium variant of the 207 and its racy looks.
Inside any Peugeot 207 cabin you’ll enjoy the punchy sound systems that offer nice acoustics, MP3 compatibility, blue-tooth communications, USB connections, electric windows and then some – these little cars are loaded and are very competitively priced.
So what’s under the hood? Peugeot 207 offers two petrol engines: a 1.4-litre, 5-speed manual with 70 kW – and a 1.6-litre, 88 kW engine that can be linked to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. Don’t forget to trial the 1.6-litre HDi turbo-diesel engine which is both very peppy and frugal. This is definitely my pick because it cruises effortlessly and provides very economical motoring.
Zipping around glitzy city streets in a small French car is oodles of fun. French cars look good, are comfortable to sit in and they are often some of the most frugal vehicles around.
So what’s it like to drive the new Peugeot 207? My latest trip into the city meant that under no circumstances should I leave a safe distance between me and the car in front or the safe space would be filled in by somebody else! A Peugeot 207 is a nimble car that responds beautifully on the throttle, responds beautifully under braking and slips in and out of gaps accurately. Any changes in direction feel well controlled and precise. Even at speed the chassis is at the top of its game. The car is well balanced on the road and the ride over road undulations is superb. You could say that this is a superb city car that loves the open road, too.
A Peugeot 207 can be powered by a number of willing engines. Power from the petrol engines is good. The 1.4-litre, 5-speed model manages to poke out a lively 70 kW and given the chance can run to 180 km/h flat out. A combined economy cycle of 6.0 litres/100 km is exceptionally good and places it at the top of its class. You can step into the more powerful 1.6-litre petrol 207. This model can come equipped with a slick-shifting 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox. With a top speed of 195 km/h and a combined fuel usage of 6.9 litres/100 km, the 4-speed automatic has a good turn of pace for what is an exceptionally economical car to run. Drive the 5-speed manual 1.6-litre version, and the experience adds up to an involving drive that’s quite entertaining. A 0-100 km/h time of 9.6 seconds makes for swift performance.
It’s not all going to go the petrol 207’s way because everyone needs to trial the smooth performance of the Peugeot 207 HDi, first. Modern times and fuel-price rises make the new baby 207 diesel a very tasty proposition for any new-car buyer who is on the lookout for a small, entertaining motor vehicle. Great handling, lusty performance and outstanding fuel economy are hallmarks of the Peugeot 207 HDi. This Euro 5-compliant power-plant features a variable geometry turbocharger with overboost giving temporary extra power for swift acceleration. Boasting a particulate emission filter means you can have fun in the 207 HDi whilst respecting the environment. With 82 kW at 3600 rpm, a maximum torque of 270 Nm from as low as 1750 rpm, a top speed of 193 km/h and a combined cycle of 4.6 l/100km ensures you’ve got yourself quite a fashion statement that tries hard to care for the environment, too.
The new Peugeot 207 is larger than the older 206 model. It has a wider cabin, making the cabin space impressive for rear seat occupants. These cars are one of the largest cars in their class. Being around four metres long and 1300 kg in weight, the Peugeot 207 is a stylish motor car that is not only very roomy but is also extremely safe. Three and five door hatchback models are available. There is also the very suave cabriolet model that is sure to pull the onlooker’s attention your way.
The new Peugeot 207 hatchback models are a great option for the commuter and small family. There are loads of luxury items inside the very fresh interior. Peugeot have given the 207 a unique style that uses high quality materials and colour schemes which are nice to touch and very pleasing on the eye. The wing shaped instrument panel is ergonomically excellent, while the interior is packed with up-to-date technology. A trip computer, dual zone climate control and a six-speaker CD sound system that has steering mounted controls are part of the little Frenchman’s package. These sorts of items add an air of French sophistication and class to the 207.
Some of the models boast an automatic-dipping rear view mirror, rain sensing front wipers, automatic headlights and an awesome satellite navigation system. All the usual luxury items can be found onboard the very up-to-date 207 and the accommodating seats offer plenty of room and heaps of style. Opt for the top of the range Sportium model, and you’ll find 16-inch alloy wheels, six airbags, cruise control with a speed limiter, electronic parking assistance, an Electronic Stability Program (ESP), front fog lights, a leather trimmed steering wheel, MP3 player connectivity, leather trim and a trip computer are all superb items.
The five-star safety result gives a boost of confidence for any serious 207 buyer. Advanced safety design and technology used in the current model is outstanding.
Spoil yourself and own the best. Peugeot stands by their product and will offer the owner of a brand new Peugeot 207 a 3 year/100 000 km warranty. Could you own this one? Definitely.
