European car of the year for 2017, the very distinguished Peugeot 3008 has lifted its game for the modern SUV buyer. Loaded with features, comfortable and efficient, the new Peugeot 3008 is a game breaker.
Like a modern day ‘cat-walk’ model, the new Peugeot 3008 has flowing lines and a light bodyweight. New from the ground up, the second generation Peugeot 3008 is the first SUV to sit on the new EMP2 platform. The EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform) is a platform that has been developed by PSA Peugeot Citroën and reduces the weight by 70 kg thanks to using a very high strength steel, aluminium and magnesium based alloy. Peugeot’s goal of reducing weight while increasing strength has given the driver of a 3008 a nimble ride with more accurate handling dynamics.
Appearance matters and the new Peugeot 3008 has very distinctive looks that capture attention to grace the city streets. The Peugeot 3008 SUV sports a fresh new look and features larger wheels, a higher ground clearance, bigger bumpers, more pronounced wheel arches and nice side skirts that run along beneath the doors. The stylish “Black Diamond” roof looks really nice and sets the car apart.
As far as size goes, the 2017 Peugeot 3008 SUV is larger both on the inside and out. A large boot space behind the rear seats can swallow 520 litres of luggage, no problems at all. A very interesting additional feature the 3008 gets is a modern rechargeable electric scooter that fits uniquely into the boot. Your teenage boys will love you for buying this car, but will everybody want one of these scooters? Hey, I might be surprised. I love scooting down the pavement, but walking is better for you, and way easier!
Slip inside the new Peugeot 3008 interior, and the design is quite breath-taking. Peugeot have always been at the forefront of beautiful interior design, and the new, almost futuristic, dashboard boasts an 8-inch touch screen, numerous state-of-the-art driver aids and latest generation i-Cockpit with personalised head-up instrument units and driving themes. The new i-Cockpit technology brings in a digital instrument cluster and removes the older analogue components.
Everything is logically laid out around the dash, and the driver enjoys a multi-function steering wheel that has a flat bottom. 3D mapping data is standard across the range, while the GT model gains more high-end features – as you would expect. These features include things like real wood dash inlays, ambient lighting, contrast stitching, a special air fragrance system, and even driver profiles that will electronically adjust systems to just the way you prefer them. The eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system is situated nice and high for easy use and easy visuals. This French system controls safety systems, ventilation, media, satellite navigation and loads more. Standard bluetooth functions work quickly, displaying texts easily. You can even plug in your phone – whatever brand you have – and the system will run the programmes based from the phone. Massaging front seats are also available.
In Australia, the new 3008 SUV is offered with the choice of two engine variants. A 6-speed automatic gearbox is linked to a punchy 121 kW turbo-petrol engine that boasts good pulling power from a low as 1400 rpm, and all this from what is a really good 1.6-litre motor.
Diesel is the other alternative in the mix, and the BlueHDi unit is the name given to Peugeot’s latest generation of diesel engines. With 133 kW, the powerful BlueHDi is exclusively available in GT guise, and the motor complies with Euro 6 emission standards and includes Stop/Start technology to deliver exceptional fuel economy and CO2 emissions. A lusty 400 Nm of torque comes in very low in the engine revs and lasts well beyond the time it takes to perform everyday passing manoeuvres with ease. The diesel motor is also well-suited for using the braked maximum spec of 1640 kg for a towed trailer.
Peugeot’s high safety credentials are well-known and common knowledge, and the new SUV also offers a range of solid new safety equipment that includes automatic braking, anti-collision warning systems, lane departure warning, driver warning function , auto high beam, blind spot monitoring, park assist and adaptive cruise control.
For a very luxurious and stylish family-sized SUV, the 2017 Peugeot 3008 is hard to overlook. The nice blend of design, technology, comfort and luxury give this practical and efficient new SUV from Peugeot such accolades that it has been given the European Car of the Year award. Life has gotten a weeny bit tougher for mainstay rivals like the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4 and even BMW X3 buyers.
