We used to have a baby Peugeot a number of years ago, and we fondly named it “the Puggle”. It did everything well and was incredibly frugal – being a diesel, Years later, and here’s a chance to see how Peugeot has progressed from what were lightly made cars to some of the safest vehicles you can buy. The icing on the cake with a new Peugeot is that the cars still provide economical travel in a comfortable, stylish package.
Peugeot is entering the SUV market at a time when there is a whole lot of competition out there. The new Peugeot 3008 SUV is up against it; however the SUV done the Peugeot way is an admirable drive. There is no AWD available, but clever FWD technology uses Traction control and ESP to ensure that the new Peugeot 3008 SUV can manoeuvre up a slippery surface, albeit via two-wheel-drive. The Grip Control system has five specific modes to aid the driver in certain conditions, and these are: normal, snow, all terrain, sand and ESP. If equipped with the Grip Control option, the Peugeot 3008 SUV comes with 16-inch alloy wheels fitted to mud and snow tyres to replace the standard 17-inch alloy wheel.
The raised ride height that an SUV vehicle offers will be liked by most people on the lookout for such a vehicle. The commanding view of the road ahead, great visibility from the driver’s seat right around the vehicle, and the level of safety equipment on-board is impressive. The 3008 SUV quite easily competes on all accounts bar the lack of AWD – though there are plenty of SUV vehicles which run with just 2WD like, for example, the Nissan Qashqai. There are of course benefits of driving with 2WD, the lesser weight and lesser friction makes for a more economical alternative.
The Peugeot 3008 SUV Active comes with the choice of two engines. The slightly quicker of the two is the petrol-fed, 1.6-litre turbo engine running with the nice six-speed automatic gearbox. With modern HDi technology, the 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine uses its healthy 340 Nm of torque via a great six-speed automatic gearbox, and the economy figures are better than average.
To look at, the flowing lines of the chunky 3008 SUV are pleasing, and they convey a form of ruggedness one comes to associate with any decent SUV. Add to the bold design the light skidplates front and rear, and you have yourself a stylish set of wheels. One of the best bits of the new 3008 design is the angular headlight and taillight configuration. Excellent nigh-time vision from the powerful light beam ahead is backed up with the tall and vivid taillights.
For reasons of excellent practicality, an SUV does provide a great way to lug passengers and luggage about. The added space means that there is less time spent trying to cram the gear on-board. Instead, the Multiflex system the Peugeot 3008 SUV offers gives some handy ways of getting gear on-board. With the second row seats in place, a large 656 litres can swallow up plenty of cargo in the boot. Lay the back of the rear seats flat, and the volume grows to a whopping 1604 litres. No, the 3008 SUV is not a seven seater, but the five seats that are available a very roomy and comfortable. There is also the space inside the cabin area that acts as great storage places. So, if space is what you need, the 3008 SUV has to be on your list of go-and-see cars.
One of the nice things about owning a new Peugeot is that you can almost guarantee that the interior will be top-notch and classy. Peugeot doesn’t do bland, so in the new Peugeot 3008 SUV there is nice upholstery, padded surfaces, chrome detailing, and lots of technologies to make your trip modern and comfortable. Features like full-screen satellite navigation, cruise control, a grunty audio system with MP3-compatiblity and automatic climate control are standard. For a little more money, you can grab yourself a full glass roof and a feature like Head-up display.
Out on the road the 3008 SUV is a well-mannered car, and the nimble cornering is aided by the roll control system. Let’s not forget the amount of safety technology hidden away from view in a Peugeot. Most people will never need a lot of the safety gear; however it’s always nice to know that it’s there in reserve.
