The 2019 Porsche Macan is here, and along with all the nice techie advancements the base 2019 Porsche Macan receives a 180 kW turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, while the high-performance S model comes with a 260 kW turbo V-6; the GTS and Turbo models have yet to be revealed, but you can bet on these packing a lot more punch than the S when they eventually arrive. Drive a Porsche Macan and you’re no slouch in any of these models.
According to Porsche, the name “Macan” is derived from the Indonesian word for “Tiger.” So here is the new Porsche Tiger – a nice metaphor for this model. A host of improvements are in the packaging. Take a look at the rear of the 2019 Macan and there you’ll find a bold LED light bar that extends right across the back end on the horizontal. I like it! It definitely gives the Macan a racier look. Big quad exhaust pipe outlets, a more pronounced roof spoiler and a more streamlined silhouette give it the thumbs up in the styling department.
Under the hood there are the new assortment of Macan engines with more power, more torque and more go. You can now select various driving modes for each model including Sport and Sport +. Sport+ is best left for track days as it really stiffens up the suspension. Sport and Sport + also performance tune the engine behaviour and gear shifts. Plant your foot when in these modes and the Macan flies with very quick, punchy gear shifts. You feel the shove in the back just like any Porsche should deliver.
When compared to all SUV possibilities on the market, the Porsche Macan has always been one of the sportier models to buy. This hasn’t changed with the 2019 Macan, and with the additional tweaks this sporty SUV only cements itself as one of the go-to SUVs if you want a very sporty drive. With the sportiness comes a new level of sophistication and technology, so with the latest Macan there is a much bigger touchscreen that boasts more clever features. The massive 10.9-inch central infotainment touchscreen is eye-catching and the glassy appearance when switched off is classy. In terms of graphics, the touchscreen looks really cool and it’s also easier to drive, but Porsche still has an obsession with buttons below the touchscreen as well as flanking the gear shift. Porsche Macan steering wheels are loaded with controls for various on-board systems, however as a steering wheel the sporty nature that is at the helm of what is a very special experience makes for a singular Porsche-unique drive.
Room in both the first and second rows is very good. It is an SUV after all. Boot space while useful (500 litres), won’t be the same as in Porsche’s bigger siblings, but I guess you already noted this. Fold the rear seats flat and then the Macan will swallow plenty (1500 litres).
You feel safe inside a Porsche Macan. The SUV is superbly strong, and even before the latest electronic gadgetry was added into the mix the Macan already boasted a five-star NCAP crash test result. Features like the active cruise control that’ll accelerate and brake for you on the motorway are superb, and traffic jam assist are some of the best safety items I think. Park assist and a 360 degree view also rate highly on the Macan’s extensive list of standard features.
For a sporty SUV drive the Porsche Macan delivers this in spades. The Macan is an SUV that drives like a Porsche. The quick steering gives excellent feedback, while the front tyres grip hard into the Tarmac for truckloads of control. All models come with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox and AWD as standard. The AWD is really handy particularly if you are on roads regularly affected by slippery surfaces. The gearbox is smooth and responsive, making the drive nice and relaxed when just loping along at normal speeds and when scampering across town.
There you have it; better looking, better tech, quicker and still the benchmark for mid-size sporty SUVs when it comes to stepping on the gas. Better get one!
