A 2023 Porsche Taycan Wagon won’t be cheap, but, as it’s one of the best of its type in the world, I guess we can expect to pay more for something this good. A new base model Taycan Wagon 4 is priced close to $200k, comes in 17 exterior colour options, is all electric, AWD, and is a thrill to drive.
At present, Australia’s Porsche showrooms have three Taycan Wagon models they can offer you. It’s the Turbo model that delivers the highest levels of performance. And then the Taycan Wagon 4S sits between the Taycan Wagon 4 and the Taycan Wagon Turbo. Other markets get the Turbo S as well. If you’re thinking that the Taycan Wagon is tame on performance, then think again because the low-slung Porsche Wagon is everything a Porsche high performance car should be.
Even though the Wagon versions of the Taycan cost slightly more than the equivalent Sedan variants, the longer roofline adds substance to the Sedan’s already nice, sleek lines, and the additional luggage space behind the rear seats is a welcome addition that makes this a versatile luxury sports-wagon. In addition to the 405-litre boot at the rear of the car there’s also an 84-litre boot space at the front (called a frunk). The Wagon’s rear boot space is expandable to 1171 litres when the 60:40 split rear seats are folded down flat. And, if you’re into a bit of mountain biking, then Porsche also provides buyers with a specially designed bike rack for the Taycan wagon, which allows you to open the electric tailgate with the bikes still mounted on the rack – very handy!
Also impressive is the seat comfort and space. And in the Taycan Wagon you’ll easily accommodate tall folk in the rear seats because there is 5 cm more headroom in the rear seats of the Wagon version compared with the standard Taycan Sedan. Loads of compartments and plenty of cup and bottle holders are also present.
Inside the 2023 Porsche Taycan Wagon is a premium interior with all the high-end trim and upholstery treatment. Opt for a Sport Chrono trim, and the Taycan Wagon gets a compass mounted on top of the dash as well as even sportier seats and interior style. The contemporary interior has a clean dash that displays all the electronic screens – even the driver’s display is digital. Also, the centre console houses a large touchscreen for accessing many of the onboard tech. Of course, the Porsche Taycan Wagon can also understand English, so Voice Commands and Voice Control are also on the menu as being ways for driver and occupants to get to what you want on the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system.
Fabulous new alloy wheel designs capture the style that unquestionably comes with owning a new electric Taycan Wagon; the rims come as wide as 21-inch. Taycan Wagons are also slightly more beefed up for light off-roading and so come with some pretty cool looking side skirts and wheel arch flares as well as a higher ride height. Handling-wise the Taycan Wagon is magnificent, and it effortlessly rides the roads on it air suspension. Add to this AWD and Gravel Mode, and the Taycan Wagon could happily tackle a rally circuit without breaking a sweat. All models accelerate quickly, handle sublimely even when pushed hard through the curves, and their straight line speed is phenomenal.
safety equipment includes ABS (antilock brakes), electronic stability control, traction control, forward collision alert, blind spot sensors, active bonnet safety systems, cameras all round, collision mitigation with emergency assisted steering, crash avoidance control with braking (low and high speeds), cross traffic alert, lane keeping active assist, fully automated parking assistance, side door exit warning, hill holder assist, and launch control, along with many other passive safety features. Euro NCAP awarded the Taycan a maximum 5-star safety rating when they tested a Taycan back in 2019. But we’re talking about the new Taycan Wagon here and, although it hasn’t been officially tested, it should have the goods for performing very well.
Porsche Taycan Wagons come with an AC and a DC port for charging the car up with more power. Standard battery packs on all of the Porsche Taycan Wagons are good for around 450 km depending on your driving style. Base models (Wagon 4) are equipped with 500 Nm of torque and 280 kW, which is enough to send you from 0-100 km/h in as little as 5.1 seconds.
Top of the models is the Turbo Taycan Wagon with 460 kW and a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 3.2 seconds, while the top speed is peaks at 260 km/h. The 4S performance sits in between these.
Stylish, fast, enjoyable, and practical. Porsche’s new Taycan Wagon ticks all the right boxes. It has to be said it is pricey though – especially the Turbo Wagon.
