Want a car that beats the magical speed barrier of 300 km/h? The new Porsche 911 Carrera S is the first of the 911 cars that sends you hurtling past this feat.
Porsche’s swift 911 Carrera S has low aerodynamics that are shaped with progressive streamlining, while the materials used in the engineering of the car are extremely light and strong. Boasting a lightweight composite construction in aluminium and steel, the Porsche 911 Carrera S carries no extra weight, and the clever weight distribution is evenly laid between front and rear so that handling is absolutely razor sharp.
Porsche started building cars in 1948, and right from the word go they set out to build sports cars. This mind-set hasn’t changed at all, and the new Porsche 911 Carrera S has racy, sleek lines that hide a few subtle changes in the car’s make-up. A wider track at the front axle and the lower roof line, gives the front of the Carrera S a purposeful stance, and the low drag coefficient of 0.29 for the 911 Carrera models is outstanding.
One gets to have a heap of fun every now and then, and when driving the Carrera S, you get a distinct urge to keep wanting to stay behind the wheel – even at the journey’s end. Addictive engine power and acceleration are combined with immense driving pleasure in the form of magnificent road holding and accurate steering. This is one car that can eat up the miles quicker than many other sports car brands. You’ll always be looking forward to the tight and twisties.
Underneath the Carrera S lines does sit a sophisticated Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system which works very well to locate every bit of available traction. Even in the wet, it’s amazing how much confidence you can have behind the wheel of the awesome new 911 Carrera S.
The 3.8-litre engine has been equipped with direct fuel injection (DFI) and VarioCam Plus for increased power and relatively low fuel consumption. Linking the 294 kW of engine power to the rear wheels is done via a 7-speed manual gearbox, with the top gear designed specifically for fuel economy. The resulting flow of acceleration is addictive and potent, and the claimed sprint times of 4.5 seconds for the 0-100 km/h dash is easily believable.
The look of dynamism and sportiness is accentuated with the Carrera’s addition of some very nice new Bi-Xenon headlights which still have the familiar oval-shaped surrounds for that classic 911 charm. Porsche’s Dynamic Light System (PDLS) with dynamic cornering lights and speed-sensitive headlight control logic is available as an option on both the hard top and Cabriolet versions. The direction indicators, daytime running lights and position lights are all LEDs and are integrated into the separate front light units. LED lights are the way of the future, and their near faultless performance and reliability make them far superior to any conventional lighting systems of yesteryear.
Twin air intakes, stainless steel tailpipes stunning alloys and the unmistakable, and likable, 911 lines give the Porsche 911 Carrera S a hot exterior that’s worth looking at. And this same stunning appearance is matched by an equally exotic looking interior, with copious amounts of leather and elegant trims available. Slip into the gorgeous racing seats, and the familiar five circular instrument cluster with the rev counter in the middle meets the eye, and there is even a high-resolution 4.6-inch full VGA TFT colour display which enables the driver to view information on a wide variety of systems on-board the car. A massively satisfying sound system features twelve loudspeakers and a total output of 821 watts.
Arguably the best driver’s car in Australia, the new Porsche 911 Carrera S packs a solid punch that leaves the M3 and 370Z a little sore.
