Both the six-speed manual version and the PDK version of the new Porsche 718 Cayman have 220 kW of power to play with, and a top speed of 275 km/h. The delicious prospect is accompanied by acceleration from 0-100 km/h in around 5 seconds. The PDK is marginally quicker, so Porsche tell us. One thing is for sure, the new Porsche Cayman 718 Cayman is sheer pleasure to drive and not bad to look at, either. There is also the new Porsche 718 Cayman S that has the uprated turbo engine of 257 kW. With the added power the car can run onto 285 km/h and complete the 0-100 km/h dash in well under five seconds – the PDK version is quicker than the manual. Interestingly enough, the fuel consumption is incredibly good for either the standard 718 Cayman or 718 Cayman S when travelling at everyday speeds. Obviously, when poked along with verve, the fuel consumption drops quickly but not as much as you might think. Again, if you opt for the PDK version, the fuel consumption is slightly better than the manual alternative. The power and drive comes from an awesome new four-cylinder turbocharged boxer engine.
Stand back and admire the lines of the brand new Porsche 718 Cayman and Cayman S. Isn’t this a beautiful balance of flowing lines and muscle that’s built into the low-profile Porsche design? It doesn’t get any better than this. You’re always going to be, unmistakably, driving a Porsche with the familiar looks and style that only comes with Porsche cars. No other cars look similar, and the new 718 Cayman is ultra-distinctive. So where do the car’s good looks come from? The lovely lines are actually a continuation of the highly successful 718 era.
More power and better fuel consumption aren’t the only aspects of the new Cayman that are improved. Compared with the previous models, an even sportier chassis holds the 718 Cayman closely in harmony with the road, providing excellent feedback for the driver. The handling and grip is sensational and loads of fun. You’re probably aware that this is a mid-engine sports car, so the balance in the handling really shines.
Inside, the interior of the new Porsche Cayman has more than kept up with the changing times. The Cayman and Cayman S are Motorsport personified in its purest form. The cluster of three round instruments, with the rev counter positioned in the centre and flanked by a 4.6-inch colour screen, is still a characteristic feature of the Cayman progression, while a new sports steering wheel is derived from the 918 Spyder design. The optional GT sports steering wheel, with its smaller diameter, further enhances the race cockpit design and feel. A step up in the quality feel of the Cayman’s interior is notable, and the luxury materials and finishings by no means take away from sportiness of the new Porsche 718 Cayman. A strong audio system brings a delicious keenness of sound inside the cabin.
The revised version of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system features a 7-inch multi-touchscreen. That works really well. Electronic front sports seats are both heated and bucket-shaped. Climate air conditioning makes travelling in the Cayman a warm, cosy experience whatever the weather might be. The cooling system works really well. Porsche have equipped the new 718 Cayman with Apple CarPlay, and it is a system that allows you to use the apps of your iPhone via the car’s on-board computer. You can use Siri to compose text messages, have incoming SMS read out and send your replies with voice control and handsfree safety. You can also listen to music and podcasts, while keeping your full concentration on the road ahead.
Safety has been thoroughly thought through, and all Cayman 718 models are equipped with the Porsche Side Impact Protection System (POSIP). This system comprises side impact protection elements in the doors and two airbags on each side. An integral thorax airbag is located in each seat side bolster, while the door panels each contain an upwards-inflating head airbag. On the new Porsche 718 Cayman, the brake callipers come with either a black finish or red finish on the S models. Brake disc diameters are 330 mm at the front and 299 mm at the rear. Bi-Xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights come as striking standard features. At the rear of the new Porsche Cayman, the three-dimensional design of the taillights combine four-spot brake lights which leaves a lasting impression on any followers which will be many. The rear taillights boast highly visible LED technology.
To standout with an even more personalised 718 Cayman or Cayman S, there are plenty of options and accessories to make your own Cayman statement. When you’re driving the latest Cayman, you’re leaving the competition further behind!
