Porsche 911 Targa

Porsche 911 Targa

Porsche 911 Targa

Porsche 911 Targa models have been around a very long time – almost since Porsche was born.  Targa models, in my humble opinion, seem a little safer than your conventional open-top convertibles in that they provide a central roll bar running over the heads of the occupants.  Targa type convertibles do have a hood or panel that can be removed from the car’s roof so you can catch the sun rays and the wind in our hair, but they leave that essential central roll bar overhead for added safety.  So why by the Porsche 911 Targa, instead of the hard top or convertible 911?  For the fun of open air motoring, but without the potential safety risk of the convertible variety.

Two types of Porsche 911 Targas can be bought new in Australia.  The standard Porsche 911 Targa 4 runs with the 257 kW, 3.4-litre engine.  Clean, brisk and smooth acceleration is the hallmark of this flexible engine.  Linked to a seven-speed manual gearbox, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 282 km/h.  A PDK version is also available.

A larger 3.8-litre boxer engine is used for powering the Porsche Targa 4S.  An immensely satisfying drive ensures that you’ll be ahead of the pack, particularly with the 294 kW at 7400 rpm and 440 Nm at 5600 rpm available.  Formidable road holding and a top speed of 294 km/h, the new Porsche 911 Targa 4S is as ready for the race track as it is for the open road.  In the 911 Targa 4S you can complete the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 4.6 seconds when married to the optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) gearbox.

Neither of the 911 Targas skimp on the essentials which make a long drive all the more special.  A pleasant leather interior boasts bucket seats that are multi-layered and specially bolstered in all the right areas to provide long-lasting comfort and premium support.  When the road is long, and you need to settle back down to the open road limit, the Porsche 911 Targa can flick into the adaptive cruise control mode while you can relax to a little of your favourite music tracks on the Burmester High-End Surround Sound System (optional) or with the excellent standard audio system made by BOSE.  By the way, the adaptive cruise control also scans the road ahead for any other cars with Porsche Active Safe (PAS); this system can slow the car down if any slower moving traffic is ahead of you.

It’s illegal to make and take calls on your handheld mobile phones, so Porsche have equipped the 911 Targa 4 and 4S with a mobile phone / Bluetooth Hands-Free communications system.  Easy access to dialling the numbers up and receiving calls means that you can be in touch with other CEOs, clients and family in no time.  This makes planning your trip and the day even easier when on the run.  A free Aha Radio app enables you to listen to internet radio, podcasts and audiobooks on PCM via your smartphone.  What about the weather?  Well, you can also receive local weather report information.  Internet content is received via your smartphone, but you operate everything from the PCM.

Porsche engineering is legendary for reliability and longevity.  Many of the components inside the chassis and engine are made to last day-after-day of track abuse.  Both Porsche 911 Targa have superior handling skills that even if some other cars may be more powerful, the complete handling, acceleration, grip and braking of the 911 Targa unite to make it an overall quicker and thrilling drive.  Porsche brakes are made from a ceramic composition so that continual brake loading is attainable time-after-time.  Porsche’s excellent stability programme keeps the car level and poised for maximum grip, ensuring you get plenty of smiles.

A Porsche Side Impact Protection System (POSIP) combines with an array of airbag technology and roll-over protection to maximise occupant safety in the event of a major accident.  Other active safety features aid the car’s traction and direction on the road.

Drive for fun and ride in the Targa version of the very swift Porsche 911 models.
