Nissan and Renault are doing such a great job of designing and building cars. Some of the nicest, streamlined designs with a difference are coming from out of this alliance. So this review is on the 2020 Renault Kadjar, which is also essentially a Nissan Qashqi. Renault claims the Kadjar name is based on two words. The ‘Kad’ bit is inspired by the word quad, and is used to represent the go anywhere nature that a vehicle has. The ‘Jar’ bit blends the two French words ‘agile’ and ‘jaillir’ respectively, and stands for agility and the action of suddenly emerging from somewhere. When I first saw the name Renault Kadjar I could have sworn it was Indian!
For a reasonable price you could have yourself a stylish small-medium size SUV in the form of the Renault Kadjar. Now as far as practicality goes, the Kadjar delivers a roomy cabin with good boot space – a boot space bigger than the Qashqi, in fact. The boot floor has a neat feature in that it can be adjusted into two smaller compartments. This is handy when you have small items in the boot that you don’t want to slip around as you corner around the roundabout. The retractable luggage blind can also easily be dislodged for storing away underneath the floor. Tethering points are another useful addition. An easy seat back lever can be pulled to split fold the rear seats as you wish, and when the entire rear seat is folded down the floor extends reasonably flat all the way through to the back of the front seats.
Hop inside the new Renault Kadjar, and you soon realise that the cabin space is not only great in the front, but the rear seat passengers get plenty of leg and head room too – even with the glass roof as standard. Speaking of which, the light from the glass roof sheds loads of nice, natural light into the cabin space, giving the cabin ambience a lift when the sun visor is folded right back. Cup-holders, charging sockets, and sizable door bins are located in the front and rear seating areas. USB ports, 12 V sockets and plenty of cubbyhole storage are available for those in the front seats, as well.
Drivers will enjoy the new digital display which comes as standard. Aesthetically, the cabin dash is very sweetly designed with simplicity in mind; and I like it. The slim-line chrome detailing is quite elegant, and the trim materials are quite nice and offer a quality feel. A central touchscreen has all the goodies you’d expect in this day-and-age, so you’re well catered for here. The push button start is a nice feature. Higher-end models boast things like: satellite navigation, a reverse camera, larger 19-inch alloy wheels, climate control and parking sensors.
Drivers will also discover that the new Renault Kadjar is nice and easy to drive about town. You have an elevated view of the road ahead, the visibility is good right around the car. With the rear-view camera and parking sensors, yes, you’ll be fine in busy city traffic. Manual and auto gearboxes are available, and the ride is nice and comfortable, even when road surfaces get a bit dodgy.
The 1.5-litre turbo diesel is a gem. Really good fuel economy is guaranteed here. A frugal 1.6 litre diesel is also offered. Other small efficient petrol engines are offered but, perhaps the 1.2-litre, though fine in the city, might struggle a bit at motorway speeds. We’ll just need to see exactly which motors will be offered here in Australia.
There it is in a nutshell really: the new Renault Kadjar is soon to be available here in Australia. Comfortable seating, good luggage capacity, good value for money and frugal engines make this a nice, handy run about. Oh, and it scores well in crash testing stats (5 stars).
