Why Monte Carlo? Skoda obviously wants to associate their cars with the French Riviera where Monte Carlo is located, in the highly desirable “Cote d’Azur” or French Riviera in South Eastern France. Monte Carlo is a favourite destination for royalty, as well as the rich and famous due to its climate and natural beauty. But dig back into a bit of Skoda’s racing history, and it was in the 1960’s that the Skoda Octavia TS was the most successful rally car in the Rallye Monte Carlo. Ten years later, it was the Skoda 130 RS that ruled the racing. The sleek coupe achieved victory in the ‘Queen of Rallies’ in 1977 at the Rallye Monte Carlo. Monte Carlo is a city that currently holds the Formula 1 Gran Prix for Monaco, so it’s with this legendary history that Skoda has linked its new Fabia Monte Carlo Hatch with.
The Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo Hatch is the most luxurious supermini that Skoda offers. Available only as a five-door hatchback the Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo is available with either the peppy 1.2-litre TSI engine. The Monte Carlo Fabia can come in a range of distinctive colours with the potential for a contrasting roof colour – in much the same way as Mini will do for their cars. It might be classed as a supermini but the car provides a roomy cabin with great leg room, while the boot space is class leading.
A long line of standard specification comes as part of choosing a Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo hatchback, and the list includes sat-nav, Bluetooth hands-free calling, a single CD player, 17-inch alloys, sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift lever, manual air-conditioning, front electric windows, front and rear fog lamps, sports suspension and a trip computer. You might like to consider the optional extras of a multi-function steering wheel, curtain airbags and parking sensors the top picks to make it even more upmarket and with a little more safety kit in the armoury.
When you want something a little different and even more exotic without breaking the bank, then Skoda does offer a complete range of cars that can deliver to your expectations. Not as expensive as you might think, the Skoda range is none the less classy. You’ll find the Fabia to be a well-priced European supermini that offers decent comfort and low running costs. It’s also good value and practical with a range of responsive but economical engines. All engines will easily better 5.6 litres/100 km when driven responsibly, with the TDI version capable of returning a smidgeon over 4 litres/100 km. These are quiet exceptional figures and worth considering on their own merit when you are deciding on a new frugal supermini of your own.
Where you’ll find the standard Skoda Fabia hatch to be very compliant and comfortable over any road surface, the Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo hatch has a firmer ride to give quicker handling through the corners and excellent road holding at higher speeds. The Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo improves on the regular car’s handling thanks to its stiffer sports suspension and bigger 17-inch alloy wheels. This is the model for the driving enthusiast where going as quickly as possible is what matters more than a more comfortable ride.
At present, there is one main engine available for the Monte Carlo Fabia Hatch in Australia, and that is the 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine with 81 kW and a DSG seven-speed automatic that works really nicely. A top speed of 195 km/h is impressive for such a small engine, while the 0-100 km/h sprint can be dispatched in less than ten seconds.
Though not currently available, I would love to see a variety of turbo-diesel engines available for the Fabia hatch in Australia. In the UK, two 1.4-litre turbo-diesel motors are offered – one with 66 kW and the other with 77 kW. These could easily power a desirable little Monte Carlo Fabia Hatch – particularly the 77 kW TDI version.
Obviously, these small Skoda Fabia engines won’t set any new land speed records but they are willing, enjoyable and very economical.
You’ll enjoy the Fabia’s elegant looks and excellent build quality. Monte Carlo the supermini up, and you have yourself quite a hot little number!
