New for 2020 is the extensively restyled Skoda Superb. A bigger grille and sleeker headlights give the Superb quite a powerful on-road presence that’s hard to keep your eyes off. From all angles it is a bit of a looker; the rear nicely balanced with a chrome strip that connects the tail lights, and the side view strong – yet the lines are completely aerodynamic and flowing. Once you see and drive a new Skoda Superb, you’ll see the sense in saving your money on a new Superb and not passing out more money in purchasing a more expensive BMW, VW or Audi equivalent.
New LED matrix headlights create a nice visual statement, and they are designed to give different lighting modes for different situations. The new technology doesn’t stop there. At the rear are very stylish, sweeping LED indicator lights that progressively expands a vertical line to indicate a turn. The latest Skoda Superb also gets a brand new predictive cruise control system that uses camera imaging at the front of the car and its satellite navigation system to combine forces for a state-of-the-art cruise control with its unique adaptive functionality. Smartphone connectivity and wireless charging makes life easy to connect with all your favourite Apps. Spotify can be thumped through a 610W, 12-speaker Canton Sound system, should you feel the urge. Front and rear parking sensors and zoned climate control are standard.
All models come with a crisp 8-inch infotainment system with DAB radio, Bluetooth and built-in sat-nav, although you can upgrade to a 9-inch version. Both sizes look great with their classy glass screen and display pin-sharp graphics once on. All models also come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Engine power is delivered in various forms: 1.5-litre turbo petrol with 112 kW, or a 2.0-litre 142 kW turbo petrol or a 203 kW turbo petrol – quick and a top of the range engine. Three diesels are also available with a 1.6 TDI, 2.0 TDI and range topping 2.0 TDI with 142 kW. You can also get the highest powered petrol and diesel engines with AWD, and these powertrains are very satisfying drives – particularly if you like to get a real shove on in the wet.
A new hybrid Skoda Superb will also become available at a later date, so it’s all getting rather exciting in the Skoda showrooms, of which there are plenty about Australia. The 1.4-litre Turbo petrol motor combines with electricity to make a very decent 163 kW hybrid output.
You can get the new Skoda Superb in wagon form. These are a great wagon that swallow loads of gear, even with the rear seats in place. Add that to a really versatile modern Skoda cabin package, underfloor storage and comfort levels, and you have a great wagon for all sorts of duties and errands. If you settle for a Liftback version of the newest Superb, then this has basically the biggest boot in the business at 625 litres with the rear seats up.
Show any of the new Skoda Superbs an open road, and these are delightful cars for whiling away the time. They are composed, comfortable, quiet and safe. You get a great Lane Keep Assist package, and the full five-star safety rating gives decent back-up if things turn a bit pear-shaped.
The Skoda Superb is well built inside and extremely comfortable. It features enough soft plastics and interesting trims to feel distinctive, and it’s a hugely impressive all-rounder. This is the latest version of Skoda’s flagship range, and the ‘Superb’ is just like what it says on the tin.
