Skoda cars are a quality European car that, obviously, the owners are enjoying owning and driving. They are becoming more apparent on Australian roads after a bit of a slow start. There is a good range of models, and the new Skoda Octavia Wagon comes in two forms: Octavia Ambition and Octavia Style. Diesel and petrol models are available, and they are a car that offers solid engineering, comfort and space. The Skoda Octavia sedan is set to impress.
Offered for 2016 are petrol and diesel options. The 110TSI petrol-fed engine can be available with either the seven-speed DSG automatic or six-speed manual version. Engine output is rated at 110 kW between 4500 and 6000 rpm. A maximum of 250 Nm of torque kicks in between 1500 and 3500 rpm. So how big is the engine? This quick-to-respond performance comes from a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine with direct injection and DOHC technology. There always seems to be a strong level of performance for quick acceleration and relaxed motorway cruising.
The 110TDI diesel engine gives long-legged performance and comes standard with the six-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Running with a generous 320 Nm of low rev torque and muscle this is the pick of the two motors, for me. Boasting 110 kW of power at 4000rpm, there is plenty of healthy performance in the 2.0-litre Octavia 110TDI wagon. The optional Tech pack gives the TDI model a choice of four driving modes: Normal, Sport, Eco and Individual.
Out on the road, the Skoda Octavia sedan and wagon offer a very controlled drive with loads of grip. The car’s accuracy makes for and enjoyable drive out on the open road. In town, the Octavia wagon rides well.
All new Skoda Octavia wagons come with innovative comfort features, plenty of storage space, five-star safety and handy features like adaptive cruise control. Open up the Octavia wagon’s tailgate, and you’ll be impressed with the deep reach and low loading capabilities. A total of 610 litres can be filled up with the rear seats in place. Put them forward, and this volume grows to a massive cave. Rivals like the Volkswagen Golf Wagon can’t match it. If you want more space, then the Peugeot 308 Station wagon provides more. The new Octavia Wagon is equipped with a variety of simple and clever storage compartments. The centre console contains two beverage holders that can also hold smaller items. Practical pockets in the front doors include 1.5-litre bottle holders. There’s a flip-open compartment near the driver (to the left under the steering wheel), there is a warning vest holder under the driver’s seat and a storage compartment in front of the gearshift. Depending on the Octavia wagon model, the following features are standard or optional: a glasses holder in the roof console, a closable compartment under the passenger seat, a storage box with armrest between the front seats and a rubbish bin in the door panel.
The 2016 Octavia has a total of seven airbags as standard. Crew Protection Assist is an optional safety package that works using radar sensors at the front of the car. It monitors the area in front of the car and evaluates the distance, direction and speed of all nearby objects. If these approaching objects pose a potential risk of collision, automatic braking will help aid occupant safety. If a chance of a collision is detected, the system will activate the pre-tensioning seatbelts, and the sunroof and windows will close. Electronic Stability Control is standard on all Octavia Wagons, while an optional driver fatigue sensor and audible warning system is also available.
It really is about spending time in the new Skoda Octavia Wagon; you’ll then find out that the car isn’t just about good looks. The all-new infotainment system combines the stereo, navigation system and trip computer into one user-friendly device. Through the infotainment system, the driver can also access the vehicle setup, drive assistant systems and comfort functions. Proximity sensors recognise when a hand is moving toward the large and clear touchscreen, and will instantly bring up the function buttons ready to be used. All new Skoda Octavia sedans come with an SD card slot, USB and AUX-IN socket to allow multiple ways of playing music or audio through your car’s speakers.
Up against its rivals, the Octavia wagon performs well. You have plenty of creature comforts and new technology inside the Skoda, so there is no shortage of features – particularly inside the Octavia Style. Height and reach adjustable, high quality leather steering wheels are standard across the Octavia range, with controls for the radio and telephone standard on Style versions. For further personalisation an optional 3 spoke Supersport steering wheel is available, while for the DSG transmission, paddles can also be ordered as an optional extra.
“What Car?” has recently awarded the Skoda Octavia as “Best family car” for 2016. With nice distinctive lines and sharp angles, the Octavia’s exterior design is balanced and elegant. There is no shortage of exterior colour choice, with fourteen bright and beautiful colours available. So what are you waiting for?
