We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to buying a new car. With so many choices and so much variety, I’m not sure if it’s easier to make a choice these days. I guess when you finally sign the dotted line, you’re probably going to be better matched to your purchase. Suzuki has had to be flexible in creating a blend of vehicles that will attract buyers. With their new range of Swift and Turbo Vitara models, they are facing a bright future where buyers are enjoying low cost motoring and excellent product marketing. One of the newest vehicles to make it into Suzuki show rooms is the latest version of the Vitara. Shrugging off some of its older 4×4 underpinnings for a new wave of lighter monocoque designs, the new look FWD and AWD Vitara has gained ground in popularity.
Being a small SUV with diesel efficiency, the 375 litres of luggage space and roomy cabin dimensions for five occupants allows the new Vitara to remain fresh, modern and practical. Putting the rear seats flat grows the luggage capacity to 710 litres. Whilst the Vitara Turbo is a fun drive, the new Diesel Vitara seems the vehicle better suited to performing manly-type jobs. Packing greater, muscly torque and better fuel consumption, the 2017 Vitara Diesel will be liked by many. Offering turbo-diesel power in a 1.6-litre capacity, the small SUV has a strong 320 Nm of torque from as low as 1750 rpm. Loaded up, the diesel still feels strong, and doesn’t run short of grunt for everyday travelling tasks. If you do need to tow a trailer, the Suzuki Vitara Diesel obliges with a 1200 kg braked trailer capacity or 400 un-braked.
One of the joys of owning the 2017 Suzuki Vitara RT-X Diesel SUV is that you have a very handy AWD system that will tackle some tough off-road conditions. On the road, the AWD capability means even better composure and grip in the wet. Limited slightly by the 180 mm of ground clearance, the Vitara Diesel AWD makes short work of muddy paddocks, ski field roads and more. The small 47 litre fuel tank delivers diesel at a controlled rate, so-much-so that you’ll enjoy one of the best economy figures in its class: 4.9 litres/100 km. Real world figures don’t stray far from this, which is impressive for sure.
Disc brakes all round make for strong stopping ability, and the chassis has minimum roll and excellent feel. To drive, the new Suzuki Vitara Diesel is swift from point-to-point, and the engine goes about its business with assertion and efficiency. Using its 17-inch paw print to maximum effect, the AWD Vitara handles any road surface with plenty of confidence.
One of the notable features of the current Vitara is that the EuroNCAP crash testing gave the Vitara a full five stars, so this is great to see. The small SUV has front airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, seatbelt load limiters and knee airbags. Front and rear occupants have side head and side chest airbags as a standard feature. Isofix is available for kids in the rear seats, too. Electronic stability control is an active safety feature that comes as standard. ABS, EBD, BAS, Traction Control, Hill Hold Control and Hill Descent Control are equipment that sets this small SUV apart.
Modern technology that you’ll find on-board the 2017 Suzuki Vitara Diesel will include things like cruise control, power windows, keyless entry and start, digital climate controlled air-conditioning, an outside temperature gauge, leather accented seats with suede inserts, driver seat height adjustment, cup holders front and rear, a 12-volt power outlet, satellite navigation, a touchscreen multifunction display screen, voice command, steering wheel controls, MP3 compatibility, AppleCarPlay, six-speaker surround sound system, Bluetooth connectivity, dusk sensing headlights, front fog lights, electrically adjustable door mirrors, parking sensors and a dual panoramic sunroof to finish it all off. These are some superb features that you’d find in cars with a much higher price tag. Well done to Suzuki for giving the buyer so much in such a stylish package.
Trendy interiors match the good looks on the outside, and build quality and functionality are at the forefront of the Vitara’s dash display. Suzuki also gives buyers the option of customising the colour of the interior trim panels for even more individuality.
Don’t forget to check out the roomier Grand Vitara models that have more 4×4 appeal, space and performance if needed. But, for a well-priced, roomy cabin with plenty of light, and an SUV with great looks the new 2017 Suzuki Vitara Diesel will be good. Top dollar new Diesel Vitaras can be had in the mid-thirties for a small SUV well worth considering.
