By no means a newbie, the Suzuki S-Cross is a small SUV that has been around the scene for over a decade. A likable, no nonsense, economical, reliable, and commendably spacious vehicle that has been well loved by many of its owners. The latest 2023 S-Cross models build on this legacy, and I happen to reckon the latest model is the best looking of the lot, while also being one of the nicest designs in its class.
So, this 3rd generation Suzuki S-Cross (SX-4) was designed by the Suzuki Italia Design Centre in Turin, Italy, and it’s currently manufactured in Hungary. While the exterior dimensions and interior space remain exactly the same as the previous model, and it still remains heavily based on the previous generation S-Cross, the 2023 model has undergone a major transformation with its exterior’s new design leading the way at the front of the vehicle, while at the new S-Cross’s rear-end there has been a heavy makeover in the way it looks as well. The overall appearance is now much neater and more sophisticated than the slightly ungainly looking previous S-Cross versions.
Also, the new model now boasts a much improved interior with all the modern tech that will have you geeking out in no time. The 2023 Suzuki S-Cross has received an updated dashboard design, a gauge cluster with a 4.2-inch LCD multi-info display from the Vitara model, and now comes with either a 7 or 9-inch floating-design touchscreen and infotainment system. You’ll find the seats are nicely supportive and comfortable, and a decent sound system makes its way into the new S-Cross. The premium models do get a few more bells and whistles, as well as a more upmarket upholstery and trim. You’ll appreciate the 5-star safety rating that comes with buying a new S-Cross, and so things like the driver assistance system (with its upgraded 360 degrees view camera, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert) makes life in the new Suzuki pretty decent for all the family.
AWD and FWD models are available, though Australia gets the AWD versions, and the car deals very well with rough roads, offering a confidence enhancing steering feel, with plenty of grip coming from the tyres as they work in tune with the driver’s demands and the well set-up chassis and suspension. Powered by a strong turbocharged 1.4-litre direct injection ICE that has mild hybrid technology, the drive feels energetic and smooth. The engine puts out 95 kW of power and boasts 235 Nm of torque. To put this in perspective, the torque is similar to many 1.8–2.4 litre passenger cars (like the 2010 Toyota Camry). Hybrid ability comes from the addition of an electric motor that produces a performance kick of 10 kW and 53 Nm. The combined fuel consumption for the new S-Cross 1.4-litre turbo mild hybrid engine is claimed to be more economical than its predecessor, and even its competitors. The car achieved a fuel economy rating between 5.3–6.1 litres/100 km according to WLTP testing.
Options are available to buyers in terms of how they want the gears changed. You can get the new Suzuki S-Cross paired up with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Both of these are available in front-wheel-drive (FWD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations, however for now they come as AWD and auto in Australia. A 5-year unlimited km warranty is valid on all new S-Cross vehicles.
Buy a new S-Cross and you’ll be buying into what is a snazzy, practical, and good-looking small and economical SUV. You can have one of these for under $50k.
