Out-and-about in the latest Suzuki Swift GLX Turbo is very enjoyable. The fresh styling and contemporary technology inside one of these helps your drives feel crisp and modern. Under the bonnet of the new Swift Turbo is a special engine that punches well above its weight.
Let’s start with why this sort of car might appeal to you. First of all, the new Suzuki Swift Turbo has small car dimensions that slip in-and-out of city gaps like a vapour. Small is good, and the Swift cabin has been modernised and restyled with new dials and switchgear. The analogue speedometer and rev counter are a nice elegant touch. Being small on the outside doesn’t always mean that the interior feels cramped. With cars like the Suzuki Swift and Honda City the designers are really good at creating space from small spaces. Seating is commendably roomy, and there is 242 litres of luggage space available in the boot with the rear seats in place. That’s enough to put your shopping and school bags in together or even a standard set of golf clubs. The rear seats are 60:40 split folding to make things even easier for carrying stuff. Fold the rear seats flat, and the luggage capacity grows to 947 litres. These sorts of things make the 2017 Swift really appealing as a city car. They aren’t overpriced either, and the dealership backup is second to none.
Good car safety carries plenty of clout these days, and with the new 2017 Suzuki Swift the 4-star safety result for EuroNCAP testing meets a high standard. It’s not the full five but there is some great safety kit on-board. Front, side and curtain airbags are standard. Even vehicle stability control and radar brake assist is standard. Hill hold control makes it really easy for any driver to pull away from a standstill on a slope – and a steep one at that. All new Suzuki Swifts come with six airbags, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), an Advanced Forward Detection System — which includes Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning, Weaving Alert, High Beam Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control.
Are you on the hunt for a new supermini car? The Suzuki Swift Turbo has some pretty cool luxury features as standard and plenty of technology for the price, so you’ll get to enjoy things like adaptive cruise control, a reversing camera, keyless entry, keyless start, digital air-conditioning, a 12V power outlet, satellite navigation, voice command, a touch screen that allows you to control numerous infotainment functions, Bluetooth connectivity and Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Hands-free phone and satellite navigation systems come complete with Bluetooth connectivity, full iPod integration, AM/FM radio and audio playback with streaming options to keep it right up to date with the Joneses. Voice recognition makes a whole lot of features very easy to use, so you can listen to your favourite music or call on the hands-free phone while concentrating on the drive ahead. You and your travelling companions are set for an enjoyable outing in the brand new Swift GLX Turbo!
Nice features on the outside of the car that are worth a mention are things like electrically adjustable side mirrors, LED projector headlights, dusk sensing headlights, a nice set of polished alloys and there’s a reversing camera which automatically comes on the moment reverse gear is selected. On the touchscreen, what the camera sees behind the car displays on the screen.
Choose the Turbo Swift, and you’ll be pleased you did because the three-cylinder motor is a gem. Rated as a 1.0-litre engine, the BOOSTERJET turbo kicks some butt. VVT technology and turbo power ensures the 82 kW of power is quickly found at 5500 rpm. Punchy response with a maximum torque of 160 Nm between 1500-and-4000 rpm feels really strong and flexible for such a small motor. The Suzuki Swift Turbo weighs in at less than 1000 kg, so the light mass, strong power delivery and paddle shifters equate to lots of fun. The six-speed auto is nice for the times when you’re keen to sit back and enjoy travelling at more sedate paces, too.
Even with the Turbo’s extra performance, you can expect to go through the fuel at a miserly rate, which is always a good thing. If you’re careful, the Swift Turbo can return a little over 5.0 litres/100 km. The factory figures of 119g/km for CO2 emissions is pretty light, too.
Compared with the stiff competition in the form of the Ford Fiesta, Mazda 2 and Skoda Fabia, the Suzuki Swift GLX Turbo is great value for money and loaded with plenty of equipment. The car looks good, too.
