When popular “Drive” magazine judges the new Suzuki Vitara Turbo the best City SUV, then you’ll probably end up taking a little more notice. The term ‘City SUV’ would suggest that the car is very well set up for busy city streets, and with Suzuki’s well-known off-road capabilities the new Suzuki Vitara S Turbo AWD will be equally at home on an open road adventure. One of the striking new features for the latest Vitara is the addition of a sparkling 1.4-litre Turbo engine. This is a gem of an engine.
If it were looks alone that drew a new car buyer’s attention, then the new Vitara Turbo has stylish looks in spades. Definitely, the sporty overtones lift the heartbeat, and with dominant power available throughout the range, the Suzuki Vitara Turbo is my pick in the Vitara range and possibly in its class. The upright stance is nicely proportioned with plenty of curves to catch the eye. Flared wheel arches and two tone colour set this sporty SUV apart from the competition as well as other cars on the road, and its unique design is captivating. At the front end, the combination of aggressive lines and strength marry attractiveness with safety. Available with a set of ploished black alloy 17-inch wheels and two-tone colouring, the Suzuki is fresh and appealing – just right for both the vibrant young buyer and the discerning motorist.
Inside the car’s cabin are more vibrant highlighting and expressive design. Leather-and-suede seats look and feel great. Capturing the eye, the red surrounds for the air vents is sporty, and I do like the analogue clock in the centre of the dash. Looking good, the instrumentation is all easy to use and modern, and owners can also opt for colour-coded trim for the dash and centre console. The Vitara S-Turbo gets plenty of modern technology that includes a 7.0-inch screen with navigation and Apple CarPlay. Electric mirrors and windows, cruise control and climate-air controls enrich the Suzuki SUV experience.
Handy practical features allow you to carry a good amount of luggage. The rear seats can be split in a 60:40 ratio and the luggage area does have a cover to keep prying eyes away. With the rear seats in place, 375 litres of luggage space is available. Roominess is good, though the rear seats are best kept for two adults or three children. One of the surprises was the good level of leg room and headroom, as it is a small SUV, after all.
Though the Suzuki Vitara Turbo is a small SUV, the new Vitara Turbo comes with five-star safety features. The Suzuki S-Turbo Vitara has seven air bags, electronic stability control (ESC), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), brake assist system (BAS), traction Control, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera and LED daylight running lights.
On the road, the Vitara Turbo SUV is nicely settled and feels agile. Grip is sure and with the smooth power delivery, the SUV is both swift and satisfying to drive. Especially endearing is the new 1.4-litre Turbo engine that is both powerful and efficient. Fuel stops will be rarer than in any other petrol-fed SUV with bigger, heavier dimensions. The six-speed auto is smooth and well matched to the 1.4-litre turbo engine, and you can expect the Vitara Turbo to return you around 6.5 litres/100 km. Engine design uses four-cylinder, inline turbo technology which combines to push out 103 kW at 5500 rpm and 220 Nm at 4000 rpm. These are figures which are very handy in the real world.
If tackling some off-road terrain is on your agenda, then you best buy the AWD version. Skid plates, Hill Descent Control and plenty of traction ensure that you can get yourself lost quick enough.
Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V buyers need to make sure they check out the new Suzuki Vitara Turbo model. It is definitely one of the best models in its class and it should be looked at before you sign the deal and hand over the money. The new Suzuki Vitara Turbo models are very easy to drive, swift, efficient and very good value.
