Are you after a no-nonsense 2WD or AWD family wagon/SUV? Toyota has the answer. Toyota seem to have more flavours than most when it comes to fulfilling the appetites of new car buyers on the lookout for something with space and SUV styling and practicality. With the new 2017 Toyota Kluger, Toyota continues a successful mix of the best features that make up a great and popular drive.
Styling for the new Kluger is more futuristic than ever with nice lines and panels with curves to keep interest and foil the air. A 2017 Toyota Kluger has space for the family, but the designers have hidden the vehicle’s dimensions well in what is an attractive SUV. Built with dimensions that place it between the smaller RAV4 and the larger Land Cruiser Prado, the Kluger uses its talents well.
Like the RAV4, the Kluger uses a monocoque chassis construction – as opposed to a body-on-frame Land Cruiser arrangement. The Kluger is based on the Camry platform while the RAV4 is based on the Corolla platform. It’s not a true off-road machine compared to the Land Cruiser and Prado, but it’s a very effective family-size wagon with AWD light-off-road ability; and as such it is a hugely popular SUV with space for five or seven occupants in comfort. Up the front are two cup holders and a gigantic 24-litre console bin that doubles as an armrest. Across the dash is a shelf made for accommodating phones, keys, glasses, maps and other important stuff you can’t do without. The middle row of seats slide back and forwards, while the 60/40 split seatback tips forward to allow for third row entry. The centre armrest has two more cup holders, and you’ve even got your own temperature controls to play with. Adults can fit in the third row, but they are probably best designed for kids. With the third row seats in place, there isn’t a mass of luggage space. In fact, you’ll find more in a Suzuki Swift. With 195 litres you’ll be able to pack a lunch. Put the third row seats flat, and the space rises to a handy 529 litres, though even a new VW Golf Wagon will better that.
You can purchase the new 2017 Kluger in both 2WD and AWD, allowing for people who love SUV dimensions but without the AWD complexity and higher running costs. Having said this, if I was to go to the trouble of buying a new SUV where AWD is an option, then the AWD, to me, is a no brainer. Who knows when you’ll end up in a sticky situation and wish you had the AWD version. AWD Klugers are made for the ski slopes and the active lifestyle that many Kluger AWD buyers enjoy. A ground clearance of over 200 mm comes in handy.
Inside the 2017 Toyota Kluger is an array of modern features ready to pamper and relax the occupants. Driver’s will enjoy a seat that adjusts with the steering wheel for ultimate positioning. Premium leather trim can be enjoyed by GLX and Grande buyers. Perched up higher than many road users, the Kluger has excellent visibility through the front window and around the sides as well. Large wing mirrors keep the driver aware of what is going on around the vehicle’s larger dimensions. Parking sensors and a reversing camera help make the job easier when critical positioning for parking is required. With the addition of active cruise control and Lane Assist, the new Kluger has safety at the heart of its drive. Five-star safety ensures the buyer of a 2017 Kluger has all the features present to keep them and their occupants as safe as possible in the event of an accident. The Kluger has ABS, stability and traction controls and brake force distribution to keep things pointing in the right direction. The Grande also adds forward collision warning, AEB, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and reverse cross traffic alert. You won’t be left wanting.
Out on the open road, the new Kluger has plenty of responsive acceleration for powering the motorways. Smooth, flexible power delivery has an eagerness more aligned with performance sedans. You’ve definitely got the grunt to keep up with any modern day transport. Equipped with the 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, the 218 kW is a very willing, and being linked to a fantastic new eight-speed auto, the engine power response is instant. A handy 350 Nm of torque is both commanding and dominant out on the open road. The auto is standard on both 2WD and AWD variants.
A strong V6 motor and a big body combine to create a very comfy cruiser. The Kluger stands over 20 cm off the deck, so back roads are a breeze, too. The trade-off for the premium ride comfort is a bit of extra body roll. AWD Klugers gain a credible level of off-road potential. Boasting a drivetrain that makes full use of its traction control systems to gather as much traction as possible keeps the Kluger charging beyond what you might think possible.
Top of the line Kuger Grande features boast 19-inch alloys, electric heated and ventilated front seats, a powered tailgate with a separate glass hatch, wood inserts in the dash and doors, partial leather trim and a rear seat information system with a 9.0-inch screen with DVD and Blu-Ray technology, active cruise control, power windows all around, three-zone climate control, leather trim, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, keyless entry and start, a six-speaker stereo with USB and Bluetooth options, plus an electric sunroof. In this guise you are looking quite special.
Where you don’t need quite so much stuff to enjoy your drive, you may well settle for the base model ToyotaKluger GX. All 2017 Toyota Klugers are fitted with a total of seven seats, a reversing camera, front and rear air-conditioning zones, cruise control, three 12-volt power points (two in the front, one in the back), automatic headlights, power windows and mirrors, rear parking sensors and rear privacy glass. This is a great starting level for the equipment trim, and the six-speaker sound system comes with AM/FM radio, a CD player, Bluetooth and USB input. A 6.1-inch touchscreen is standard in the GX, while GXL and Grande models get an 8.0-inch screen and satellite navigation.
Join the large Kluger fraternity who are enjoying the vehicle’s fantastic cruising ability. Of course, Toyota reliability is hard to overlook. Other alternatives, are Hyundai’s Santa Fe and Mazda’s CX-5.
