2018 brings us a new Toyota Camry. Thrifty aerodynamics for the popular sedan are both sleek and attractive, and the overall package is very much improved over the last one – which was already good! Bolder, bulgier and lower profile in the stylish exterior makes the 2018 Toyota Camry an eye-catching sedan. Still with similarly friendly and welcoming dimensions that are in keeping with Camrys that have gone before, the new Camry is a cracker. This model does have more pizazz and looks quite sporty compared to previous Camry generations. There are a number of Camry models to choose from, while a choice of three engines keeps the pick-and-choose nature of the modern Toyota fleet very much alive. You’re sure to find a mix of Camry power and looks that suits your own individuality and needs.
It is true that over the various generations of Toyota Camry the car has grown in dimensions to become a really dependable, roomy and large sedan. With all the cabin space to seat five adults comfortably, the 2018 Camry is an excellent choice for both family and business. This latest model boasts a new double-wishbone rear suspension that was trialled and tested in the Prius model to great effect. With the more modern suspension layout (which steers away from the rear struts used before) you get way better ride comfort, less road noise, tighter handling and even a sharper steering feel for the new 2018 Camry. Body rigidity is stiffer, and this means that the new Toyota Camry not only handles better but is stronger too.
On the road, the new Camry has plenty of grip and fells solid and safe. Each model of Toyota Camry rides and handles well. The sportier SX sedan is the model with a tweaked sports suspension for even tauter, sportier handling and less body pitch and roll. If you’re after the V6 power than the SX or SL will be the model for you.
Engines start with the Dual VVT-i, DOHC 2.5-litre petrol engine that puts out a respectable 135 kW @ 6000 rpm and 235 Nm @ 4100 rpm. You can expect fuel economy to be around 8 litres/100 km on average.
There is a V6 petrol engine that is smooth and fast. This 3.5-litre DOHC engine packs 224 kW @ 6600 rpm and 362 Nm @ 4700 rpm.
This leaves the hybrid motor with 131 kW @ 5700 rpm and 221 Nm @ 3600 rpm. Fuel efficiency is a rather fanciful 4.5 litres/100 km on average.
A new Toyota Camry has a long list of safety kit that’s as good as you’ll find in comparable cars. There are a full array of airbags, a rear-view camera, traffic-adapting cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and mitigation, and auto-dimming LED headlights standard on all 2018 Toyota Camry models.
If your budget allows, do look at upgrading to the Audio package and the Convenience package. The Audio package has a larger touchscreen, more connectivity enhancements, dual-zone climate control and rear passenger air vents. The Convenience package offers some nice extra technology like keyless ignition and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror for not too much money on top.
Basically, the Toyota Camry Ascent sedan comes with the 2.5-litre Hybrid engine or 4-cylinder petrol engine, 17-inch alloy wheels, manual air conditioning, a 4.2-inch colour Multi-Information display, a smaller 7-inch colour touch screen, Toyota Link LED headlamps, an electric park brake, 7 SRS airbags, Toyota Safety Sense+, a reversing camera, dual-zone automatic climate control (Hybrid only), and Smart Entry and Smart Start (Hybrid only).
The Toyota Camry Ascent Sport sedan adds a sports body kit, a premium leather steering wheel and gear shifter, a larger 7-inch colour Multi-Information display, a bigger 8-inch colour touch screen display, satellite navigation, Smart Entry and Smart Start.
Looking really good and a great head-turner, the Toyota Camry SX offers the bigger V6 petrol engine if you want – though the 4-cylinder petrol engine is also available. You also enjoy 19-inch alloy wheels, a sports suspension, paddle shifters, a special sports leather accented interior, 2 rear USB charging ports, a wireless phone charger and an optional Panoramic full glass roof.
Toyota’s most luxurious 2018 Camry would have to be the Camry SL. With the SL you can choose between the 2.5-litre hybrid, V6 or 4-cylinder petrol engines. You’ll also appreciate 18-inch alloys, leather seats, front seat heating/cooling, a 10-inch colour Head-Up Display, rain sensing wipers, blind spot monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a panoramic full glass roof (Petrol only), and an electric tilt/slide moon roof (Hybrid only).
Elevated and ready for the competition, the 2018 Camry is a well-equipped and reliable large sedan that rides and performs extremely well. It’s just got way better!
