The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is the most spacious RAV4 yet, and having been redesigned from the ground up there is a bit more space in the cabin for five occupants and as much as 580 litres of luggage space with the rear seats up in place. At home both on and off road, the AWD RAV4 models will be the perfect match for those of you who like to take the road less travelled. 2WD variants are also available for those who spend all of their time in an urban jungle.
Modern and stylish, the new Toyota RAV4 is a comfortable SUV with a welcoming interior that’s comfortable and well equipped. As far as technology goes, the latest RAV4 is quite a sophisticated set of wheels. Items like the Toyota Safety Sense, wireless connections, a digital driver’s display, keyless smart entry, an 8-inch audio display and radar cruise control make the new RAV4 drive quite special.
Here is a taste of what each of the latest generation RAV4 models offer. The 2WD RAV4 GX is the base model and yet still manages to put some nice quality features inside. Toyota Safety Sense, satellite navigation, SUNA traffic channel, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), air conditioning, and 17-inch alloys all find their way inside the GX.
The 2WD RAV4 GXL adds Smart Key, a QI Wireless Charger, Dual Zone Climate Air-conditioning, an automatic dimming rear view mirror and 18-inch alloys.
Next in the range is the stylish 2WD RAV4 Cruiser which adds a powered fifth door, leather upholstery, driver’s lumbar support, front seat heaters, a panoramic glass sunroof, and 19-inch alloys.
AWD RAV4s will be a hit for the many buyers on the lookout for a reliable AWD SUV. The RAV4 AWD models include the: RAV4 GX 2.5-litre Hybrid with GX equipment levels, the 2.5-litre petrol RAV4 GXL and the RAV4 2.5-litre GXL Hybrid with GXL equipment levels and an AWD system which offers Dynamic Torque Control all-wheel-drive for enhanced traction and off-road capability, and the AWD RAV4 2.5-litre Hybrid Cruiser which is distinguished by a tilt/slide glass sunroof and 18-inch alloys. Top of the range with all the bells and whistles, and known as the AWD Toyota RAV4 Edge model, you get things like ventilated front seats in synthetic leather upholstery, a distinctive exterior and interior design lift, unique 19-inch alloys as well as the Dynamic Torque Vectoring all-wheel-drive system and Downhill Assist Control.
For those who like to know how grunty the new RAV4 is, then the following engine specs indicate how much power and torque is on offer. One thing is for certain, Toyota’s 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines are remarkably smooth, offering effortless high speed touring. The hybrids are also smooth and powerful, and yet they provide the driver with excellent fuel economy. So, the GX, GXL and Cruiser 2.0-litre petrol engine packs 127 kW at 6600 rpm, and delivers 203 Nm of torque between 4400 and 4900 rpm. Agreeable smooth, strong acceleration makes for a nice drive.
The GX Hybrid, GXL Hybrid and Cruiser Hybrid models in 2WD form offer a petrol/hybrid combined output of 160 kW. The 2.5-litre petrol engine is part of the hybrid system and delivers 221 Nm at 3600 rpm. In AWD form the hybrid system delivers the same torque figure but a slightly higher power output combined of 163 kW.
The flagship RAV4 Edge uses a petrol only version of the 2.5-litre engine which delivers a punchy 152 kW. Torque has a noticeable lift to 243 Nm between 4000 and 5000 rpm. Undoubtedly, the new Toyota RAV4 Edge is a really nice way to get around.
As you would expect, the Hybrids are the most economical versions of the new Toyota RAV4, and can easily return around 5-litres/100 km. Go petrol only, and the 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol engines deliver around 7 litres/100 km depending on your driving route, lead foot bias and how much commuting in congested traffic you end up doing. By now most people realise that real world figures are often quite different to manufacturer’s fuel economy claims, and yet the Toyota RAV4 seemed to be reliably efficient and enjoyable to drive on all accounts.
There is a sense that Toyota has taken the next generation RAV4 to the next level of safety, and in reality it has because the RAV4 now comes with Toyota Safety Sense which is a package of active safety systems designed to keep you and your passengers protected. Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beam, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Detection all come as standard on every model.
Buy one of the new Toyota RAV4 range, and you’ll be getting a drive that’s ready for all occasions, is safe and built tough.
